Understanding microneedling

Controlled micro-injuries activate the skin's natural repair response, stimulating new collagen and elastin formation over time.

Rejuvena team member holding the SkinPen Precision microneedling device in our Bedford clinic

What is SkinPen® microneedling, and how does it work?

Microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is a non-invasive treatment that harnesses the skin's natural healing response. Using the medical-grade SkinPen® device, ultra-fine needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin's surface. These micro-injuries trigger the skin's repair process, prompting the production of fresh collagen and elastin — the building blocks of healthy, youthful skin.

Because needle depth is adjustable, treatment can be tailored to the face, neck, décolletage or body and to specific concerns. SkinPen® is FDA-cleared and effective for acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven tone and texture, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks — refining and renewing the skin with minimal downtime.

I particularly like SkinPen for patients where the main concern is skin quality rather than volume loss. The improvement develops gradually as collagen remodelling takes place, which is why I usually recommend assessing results over a course rather than after a single treatment.

What our patients say

As a battle-scarred rugby veteran, I may be considered an unlikely candidate for aesthetic skin treatment. However after many years of suffering venous leg ulceration, treated at considerable time and cost to the NHS, a trusted health professional suggested I try laser treatment to supplement my body's own healing process. Soon after starting treatment at Rejuvena Clinic Bedford, I found remarkably rapid healing of stubborn chronic ulcers and have a very positive view of success over the course of my treatment. Thanks to you, Dr. Nick!

Rejuvena repliedThank you very much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. I’m delighted to hear how much progress you’ve made, particularly after such a long and difficult journey

I recently had a Diamond Glow Facial and was very pleased with the experience. The treatment left my skin feeling deeply cleansed, refreshed, and smooth. My face looked brighter after the facial, and my skin felt much cleaner and healthier. Lana was professional and made me feel comfortable throughout the treatment. I would recommend this facial to anyone looking to give their skin a thorough cleanse and refresh.

Rejuvena repliedThank you for your kind feedback Lauren. I am glad to hear that you are happy with the results. Truly appreciate your comments ☺️🙏

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — SkinPen® microneedling in Bedford

What is SkinPen® microneedling?
SkinPen® is a medical-grade microneedling device used to treat acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and uneven texture by stimulating the skin's natural repair.
How does it work?
Tiny needles create micro-channels in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the repair process, producing new collagen and elastin to improve texture and appearance.
Is SkinPen better than RF microneedling?
Neither is universally better — they work differently. SkinPen® uses controlled microneedling without heat to stimulate the skin's natural repair and collagen-remodelling response, making it particularly useful for acne scarring, enlarged pores, uneven texture and fine lines.

RF microneedling, such as Morpheus8, combines needles with radiofrequency energy and may be preferable when skin laxity, tightening or deeper tissue remodelling are additional concerns. At your consultation, we assess your skin and recommend the treatment — or combination — most appropriate for your concerns.
SkinPen vs Dermaroller — what's the difference?
Both use microneedling, but the way the needles enter the skin is different. A dermaroller uses needles mounted on a roller that passes across the skin, whereas SkinPen® uses a sterile, single-use cartridge with vertically moving needles and adjustable treatment depth.

This allows treatment to be precisely tailored to different areas and skin concerns. SkinPen is a regulated medical microneedling system rather than a home-use cosmetic roller.
Can SkinPen help acne scars?
Yes — SkinPen® can improve the appearance of atrophic acne scars by stimulating collagen remodelling, and facial acne scarring is one of SkinPen's specific medical indications. Clinical studies have demonstrated improvement following a course of treatment.

However, deeper scars — particularly ice-pick, deep boxcar or tethered rolling scars — may not respond sufficiently to microneedling alone. Depending on the type and depth of scarring, we may recommend combining SkinPen with treatments such as laser resurfacing, subcision or other scar treatments.
Can SkinPen treat pigmentation?
SkinPen® may improve some forms of uneven pigmentation or dyschromia, and pigmentation conditions are included among its aesthetic purposes in the UK instructions for use.

However, not all pigmentation should be microneedled. Melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, sun damage and individual pigmented lesions require different approaches. We therefore assess the cause of pigmentation before recommending treatment.
Can SkinPen treat stretch marks?
Yes — stretch marks are included among SkinPen®'s aesthetic indications. Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that encourage collagen remodelling within the affected skin, which may gradually improve the texture and appearance of stretch marks.

Several treatments are usually required, and complete removal of stretch marks should not be expected.
Is SkinPen suitable for darker skin tones?
Yes. One advantage of SkinPen® is that it does not rely on heat or light energy, and SkinPen has clinical data involving the full range of Fitzpatrick skin types for facial acne scars.

However, darker skin can be more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following skin injury, so appropriate treatment settings, preparation and aftercare remain important.
Can I have SkinPen if I have active acne?
It depends on the type and severity of the acne. We generally avoid microneedling directly over inflamed, pustular, cystic or infected acne, as disrupting active lesions may increase irritation and potentially spread infection.

If acne is still active, we may recommend controlling the inflammation first and treating the residual acne scarring once the skin has settled. Active skin infection is specifically listed as a reason microneedling may not be suitable.
Is SkinPen safe around the eyes?
SkinPen® can be used carefully in appropriate areas around the eyes, particularly where fine lines and skin texture are concerns. Treatment depth is adjusted according to the anatomy and thickness of the skin being treated.

We do not microneedle the eyelid itself or treat indiscriminately close to the eye. The area is assessed first and treated using appropriate depths and technique.
Is it safe?
Yes — SkinPen® is FDA-cleared and considered safe when performed by a trained professional, with a low risk of side effects.
Who shouldn't have microneedling?
SkinPen® isn't suitable for everyone. Treatment may need to be avoided or postponed if you have an active skin infection, active inflammatory rash, active cold sores, certain skin disorders, significant problems with wound healing or a tendency to abnormal scarring. Certain medications and medical conditions can also make microneedling inappropriate. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are among circumstances where treatment may not be suitable.

We therefore carry out a consultation and medical assessment before treatment to make sure SkinPen is appropriate and safe for you.
Does it hurt?
Most people find SkinPen® comfortable — typically slight pressure or a light prickling sensation. Numbing cream is generally not needed, though it can be applied for deeper treatments or more sensitive areas.
What is the downtime?
Minimal — redness and a mild sunburn-like feeling for 24–48 hours. Most resume normal activities within a day.
How soon can I wear makeup after SkinPen?
We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before applying makeup following SkinPen®. Immediately after treatment the skin barrier is temporarily disrupted and should be kept clean while it begins to recover.

Your skin may remain pink or mildly sensitive for 24–48 hours, and we will provide you with personalised aftercare instructions following treatment.
How many treatments are needed?
Typically a series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results, depending on your skin and goals.
When will I start seeing results?
Some patients notice their skin looking fresher and smoother relatively early, but the main benefits of SkinPen® develop gradually as collagen remodelling takes place.

Improvement usually becomes more noticeable over the following weeks and continues after treatment. For concerns such as acne scarring, pores and texture, we usually assess the overall result after completing the recommended course rather than judging the treatment after a single session.
How long do SkinPen results last?
The collagen produced following microneedling does not simply disappear when the initial redness or glow settles. Improvements in texture and scarring can therefore be long-lasting.

However, SkinPen® cannot stop the normal ageing process, sun exposure or the development of new skin concerns. Some patients choose occasional maintenance treatments after completing their initial course.
Can SkinPen be combined with PRP or other treatments?
Yes — microneedling can form part of a wider skin-treatment plan, but combinations need to be chosen carefully.

SkinPen® can be incorporated into treatment programmes alongside PRP, laser treatments, skin boosters or other collagen-stimulating procedures, depending on your skin and treatment goals. These treatments do not necessarily need to be performed on the same day.

Importantly, SkinPen is not cleared as a device for delivering PRP, injectable products, serums or other substances into the skin. We therefore assess combination treatments individually rather than routinely applying products into freshly microneedled skin.
How much does microneedling cost in Bedford?
Microneedling with stem cells / exosomes included is £250 per session for the face (course of 3 — £675) and £300 per session for face & neck (course of 3 — £825). Our signature Rejuvenate & Glow treatment — microneedling with PRP — is £545 per session. Your consultation and skin assessment are included. See our full pricing for details.

Is it right for you?

SkinPen microneedling suits adults who want to refine skin texture, soften acne scarring, reduce the appearance of pores and fine lines, or improve overall skin quality with minimal downtime. It is well-suited to those who prefer a natural, collagen-led result that uses the skin's own healing response. It can be tailored to the face, neck, decolletage or body, and may be combined with stem cells or exosomes where clinically appropriate.

When it isn’t suitable

Microneedling is not suitable during active acne breakouts, skin infections, cold sores or eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area, or over moles and lesions. It is generally avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding, for those with a history of keloid scarring, certain bleeding disorders, or recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use. Suitability is always confirmed at your consultation, where any medications or skin conditions can be discussed.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared, medical-grade device, and treatment is considered safe with a low risk of side effects when performed by a trained professional under clinical oversight. A numbing cream is applied for comfort, and most people feel only slight pressure or a tingling sensation. Common, temporary effects include redness and a mild sunburn-like sensation for around 24 to 48 hours, with most resuming normal activities within a day. We provide gentle aftercare guidance on cleansing, moisturising and high-SPF protection as your results build over the following weeks.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
