Understanding laser resurfacing

Resurfacing removes damaged skin so healthier skin can grow in its place. The Cool Laser does it layer by precise layer — with far less heat than CO2.

Cool Laser Skin Resurfacing — Rejuvena Clinic Bedford

What is laser skin resurfacing, and how does it work?

Laser skin resurfacing is a clinically proven treatment that removes the outer, damaged layers of skin to reveal healthier skin underneath, while boosting collagen production to firm and tighten over time. At Rejuvena we use the Dermablate Erbium:YAG Cool Laser™ — a fractional 2940nm laser that resurfaces the skin layer by layer with precise control over depth.

Unlike older CO2 lasers, the Cool Laser targets the water between skin layers without causing excess tissue damage — so it needs less downtime and is far more comfortable. It's suitable for a wide range of skin types, including darker tones, and treats fine lines, wrinkles, acne and surgical scars, uneven tone, sun damage, enlarged pores and stretch marks.

The technology

Cool Laser™ vs CO2 — why it matters

The Dermablate Er:YAG Cool Laser™ is the modern evolution of resurfacing — the power of laser rejuvenation with the gentleness aesthetic patients need.

Er:YAG · 2940nm

Dermablate Cool Laser™

Highest water absorption for precise, ultra-thin ablation with minimal thermal damage and built-in cooling.

  • Downtime ~3–7 days
  • Comfort Significantly more comfortable
  • Skin types Low PIH risk — safe for all tones
CO2 · 10600nm

Traditional CO2 laser

Deeper, more thermal damage — effective but with a harsher recovery and higher pigmentation risk.

  • Downtime 7–14 days
  • Comfort Higher discomfort
  • Skin types Higher PIH risk in darker skin

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — laser resurfacing in Bedford

Is laser skin resurfacing painful?
Most patients describe a mild heat or prickling. The Cool Laser's built-in cooling significantly improves comfort, and numbing cream is applied before treatment.
How long is recovery?
Downtime depends on depth — superficial treatments may have just 2–3 days of redness and flaking, while deeper resurfacing may take up to 7 days.
How many sessions will I need?
Many patients see visible results after a single session. Deeper concerns such as acne scars or deeper wrinkles may need a course of 2–3 treatments.
Is it safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. The Erbium:YAG Cool Laser™ has a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation than CO2, making it safer for Fitzpatrick skin types III–V.
Can I wear makeup afterwards?
Avoid makeup for at least 48–72 hours, or until the skin has healed, then use clean, non-comedogenic products.
How much does laser resurfacing cost in Bedford?
Resurfacing starts from £350, with a consultation and assessment at £50. See our full pricing.

Is it right for you?

Cool Laser resurfacing suits adults who want to improve fine lines, scarring, sun damage, uneven tone or enlarged pores with less downtime than traditional CO2 lasers. Because the Erbium:YAG platform carries a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, it is suitable across a wide range of skin types, including darker tones (Fitzpatrick I-VI). It is a good option for those seeking natural, gradual improvement supported by collagen renewal.

When it isn’t suitable

Resurfacing is not advised if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection, cold sore or inflammation in the treatment area, or a recent tan or sunburn. It may not be suitable if you take photosensitising medication, isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the past 6-12 months, or have a history of keloid scarring or certain autoimmune conditions. Your suitability is always confirmed at a doctor-led consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Cool Laser resurfacing is a clinically proven treatment, and our doctor-led team tailors the depth to keep it as safe and comfortable as possible; topical anaesthetic and the laser's built-in cooling improve comfort during the 15-30 minute session. Common, temporary side effects include redness, mild swelling and gentle flaking, typically settling within a few days for superficial treatments and up to around 7 days for deeper resurfacing. Less commonly, temporary changes in pigmentation can occur, though the Er:YAG Cool Laser carries lower risk than CO2. You will receive full aftercare advice, including avoiding makeup for 48-72 hours and using high-SPF sunscreen while healing.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
