What is Radiesse?
Radiesse is an injectable calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) biostimulatory dermal filler that gives immediate lift and stimulates the skin’s own collagen (neocollagenesis) over the following months. Made by Merz Aesthetics, it is composed of smooth CaHA microspheres (around 25–45 microns) suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier — roughly 30% microspheres to 70% gel. CaHA is a biocompatible mineral chemically similar to the mineral found naturally in bone, with no animal- or human-derived material, so no allergy skin test is required.
This makes Radiesse a dual-action treatment. Unlike a standard hyaluronic-acid filler that simply adds volume, Radiesse acts as a scaffold that your own fibroblasts colonise to lay down fresh collagen and elastin. The result is restored contour today and gradually improving skin quality over the weeks that follow. Classic Radiesse vs hyperdilute Radiesse
There are two ways we may use it. Classic Radiesse (often with lidocaine for comfort) is used to volumise and contour — defining the jawline and chin, supporting the cheeks, and softening jowls and folds. Hyperdilute Radiesse is diluted and spread more thinly to act as a skin-quality biostimulator, firming crepey skin on the neck, hands and décolletage. Long-term collagen

The microspheres are then gradually broken down into calcium and phosphate and metabolised normally — what remains is your own new tissue.

Consultation & assessment
Dr Nick reviews your medical history, examines the area and discusses realistic goals. He screens for contraindications and confirms whether Radiesse — and which form — is appropriate, or whether a different or medical pathway is the better option, in which case he refers you appropriately.
Preparation
The treatment area is cleansed. Radiesse contains (or is mixed with) lidocaine for comfort, and topical numbing may be used. No allergy test is needed because CaHA is non-animal and biocompatible.
Precise placement
Dr Nick injects Radiesse with a fine needle or cannula at the correct tissue depth. For contouring it is placed where structural support is needed; for hyperdilute skin firming it is spread evenly across the zone. Most treatments take around 15–30 minutes.
Immediate result & review
You will see an immediate lift. Dr Nick checks symmetry and that the result looks natural, not overdone, and confirms placement before you leave.
Aftercare & collagen phase
For 24–48 hours avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, excessive heat (sauna, sunbeds) and makeup for around 12–24 hours; sleep slightly elevated and use cool compresses for any swelling. Where possible, avoid dental work and non-urgent vaccinations for about two weeks. Your collagen-driven result then matures over the next two to three months.

Who it may suit

It suits people wanting a longer-lasting, collagen-building option rather than (or alongside) HA fillers.
Who is not suitable
Radiesse is not recommended under 21, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection or inflammation at the site, known hypersensitivity to any component (or to lidocaine for the lidocaine form), or a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies. It is used with caution with bleeding disorders or anticoagulants, autoimmune or keloid tendencies. CaHA is not licensed for the lips, glabella or tear troughs — HA fillers are preferred there. Anyone whose laxity needs a device or surgery is redirected, not over-treated.
Side effects & risks
Common, temporary effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and firmness, usually settling within days to about two weeks. Less commonly, palpable nodules or delayed inflammation can occur (sometimes triggered by later illness, dental work or vaccination). Rarely, accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause vascular occlusion, tissue damage or — very rarely — visual loss. Because CaHA cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase like HA fillers, being treated by a medically qualified doctor who can recognise and manage complications is essential.
