What is lip filler, and how does it work?
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler placed into and around the lips to restore or enhance volume, redefine the vermilion border, improve hydration and correct asymmetry. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your body already produces and which naturally attracts water, so a well-placed HA filler both adds structure and holds moisture in the tissue — which is why treated lips look plumper and feel softer rather than simply larger.
At Rejuvena in Bedford every lip treatment starts with a face-to-face consultation and medical assessment with Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, Postgraduate Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine). He assesses your lip anatomy, proportions and the surrounding facial structure, discusses realistically what filler can and cannot achieve for you, and agrees an amount — usually 0.5ml to 1ml — before any injecting begins. It is gradually broken down by your body over roughly six to twelve months, and it is reversible — if you are unhappy with a result, or in the rare event of a complication, it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Our medical injector reviews your medical history, assesses your lip and facial proportions, and agrees the goal and the amount of filler with you. Photographs are taken so progress can be compared honestly.
Numbing
A topical numbing cream is applied and left to work. The HA products we use also contain lidocaine, so the lip becomes progressively more comfortable as treatment proceeds.
Your treatment
Filler is placed with a fine needle or cannula in small, controlled amounts, building the result gradually and checking symmetry as we go. Where it adds safety, ultrasound is used to map the vessels first. The injecting itself usually takes 20–30 minutes.
Aftercare & review
Expect swelling for the first few days — lips swell more than any other area — and possible bruising. You will get clear written aftercare. The true result is judged at about two weeks, when any refinement can be discussed.
