Understanding pico toning

Pico toning uses ultra-short picosecond laser pulses to photoacoustically shatter excess melanin — fading pigment, melasma and dull, uneven tone with minimal heat. It manages and brightens pigmentation; it is not a permanent cure, and sun protection is part of the treatment.

What is pico toning?

Pico toning is a picosecond-laser “toning” treatment — a course of low-fluence, large-spot laser passes used to break down excess melanin and improve uneven pigmentation, melasma, sun and age spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and dull, blotchy tone. The word “picosecond” refers to the pulse duration: one trillionth of a second (around 300–900 picoseconds), far shorter than the older Q-switched nanosecond lasers.

Because each pulse is shorter than the time it takes melanin to shed heat, the energy acts largely by a photoacoustic (photomechanical) effect rather than by heat — a tiny shockwave that fragments pigment into fine particles your body then clears, with less heat spreading into the surrounding skin. That lower thermal load is why pico toning can be a gentler option for pigment-prone and darker skin tones than older lasers, though it does not remove the risk entirely.

At Rejuvena Laser & Aesthetic Clinic in Bedford, pico toning is doctor-led. Every pigmented area is assessed by Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251) before any laser is used, and settings are matched to your skin type. If you are researching pigmentation treatment in Bedford more broadly, this page covers the picosecond laser procedure specifically.

The technology

How picosecond laser toning works

Pico toning is not heat-based “burning” of pigment. Ultra-short pulses fragment melanin photoacoustically while sparing surrounding tissue — delivered as low-fluence, multi-pass toning across the whole treatment zone for a brighter, more even result.

Photoacoustic · low-fluence

Shattering melanin, not heating skin

The picosecond pulse is shorter than melanin’s thermal relaxation time, so pigment is broken apart by an acoustic shockwave rather than cooked by heat. Fragmenting melanin into tiny particles lets the body’s immune cells clear it gradually, while keeping heat diffusion into nearby skin low — which helps reduce (but does not eliminate) the risk of thermal injury and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Best for Melasma, sun & age spots, freckles, PIH, dull tone
  • Wavelengths Picosecond class (e.g. 1064 nm Nd:YAG / 755 nm) — confirmed at consultation
  • Effect Photoacoustic, minimal heat
  • Downtime Usually mild redness/warmth, minimal
Pico vs nanosecond

Why pico suits melasma & darker skin tones

Melasma is heat-sensitive and notoriously easy to aggravate. Picosecond toning’s shorter pulse and lower fluence deliver less cumulative heat than older Q-switched nanosecond lasers, which is why low-fluence 1064 nm toning is one of the more studied laser approaches for melasma. For higher Fitzpatrick skin types, the British Association of Dermatologists cautions that any laser can sometimes worsen pigment or cause lighter patches — so Dr Nick assesses suitability, may advise a test patch and conservative settings, and sometimes recommends a non-laser route such as a Cosmelan depigmentation peel instead.

  • Mechanism Less heat = lower PIH risk vs older lasers
  • Skin tone Fitzpatrick-aware, doctor-assessed settings
  • Honest note Lower risk, not zero risk
  • Pairs with Topical pigment-control / SPF protocol

The session

Your pico toning session — step by step

1

Doctor-led skin assessment

Dr Nick examines your pigmentation, confirms the type (melasma, sun spots, PIH or general unevenness), checks your skin type and history, and assesses any pigmented lesion. Anything atypical or suspicious is assessed and referred appropriately rather than lasered. Book a doctor-led skin analysis if you would like a full assessment first.

2

Patch test & priming

For pigment-prone or darker skin, a test patch and a short pre-treatment skincare regimen (often a tyrosinase-inhibitor / pigment-control routine and strict SPF) may be advised to lower the chance of rebound and PIH.

3

Comfort measures

Protective eyewear is fitted. Many people describe the sensation as a mild tingling or “rubber-band” snap with a little warmth; topical comfort measures can be used for sensitive areas.

4

Low-fluence laser passes

The picosecond handpiece is passed across the area in several gentle, low-fluence passes (laser “toning”). A facial treatment is typically quick. You may notice a light flush or, with discrete spots, a temporary darkening that flakes away over the following days.

5

Aftercare & sun protection

Mild redness/warmth usually settles quickly. You’ll be advised to avoid heat, saunas and sun, use a gentle moisturiser, not pick any scabs, and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30–50+ reapplied through the day. Sun protection is part of the treatment — without it, results reverse.

6

Your course & maintenance

Pico toning works over a course — commonly several sessions spaced roughly 2–4 weeks apart, with maintenance afterwards. Sun spots and freckles often respond faster; melasma is slower and needs ongoing management.

With pigment, the settings matter as much as the laser. We assess every pigmented lesion first, treat conservatively, and never promise a cure for melasma — we manage it, and we protect the skin.

Is it right for you?

Candidacy, safety & who is not suitable

Who it suits

Healthy adults with stubborn melasma, sun and age spots, freckles, PIH or generally uneven, dull tone that hasn’t responded to topical care — and who are willing to commit to a treatment course and daily sun protection.

Who is not suitable

We defer treatment in pregnancy or breastfeeding (pregnancy melasma often fades after delivery), with an active tan or recent sunbed use, active skin infection or eczema in the area, recent isotretinoin or other photosensitising medication, and a history of keloid scarring. Darker skin types are treated with extra caution or sometimes advised an alternative.

Safety & side-effects

Expected effects include transient redness, mild warmth or stinging, temporary darkening then flaking of spots, and occasional pinpoint scabbing. Important risks — PIH, melasma rebound/recurrence, mottled lightening and, rarely, blistering — rise with darker skin and aggressive settings, which is exactly why doctor-led, conservative settings matter. Any atypical or changing pigmented lesion is assessed by Dr Nick and referred appropriately, never lasered blindly.

FAQ

Pico toning FAQs — Bedford

What is pico toning and how is it different from a normal pico laser?
Pico toning is a specific low-fluence, large-spot “toning” technique using a picosecond laser. Rather than aggressively targeting one spot, it delivers several gentle passes across the whole area to even out pigment and brighten tone. The same picosecond device can also be used at higher energy for discrete lesions or laser tattoo removal in Bedford — pico toning is the gentle, multi-pass setting used for melasma and overall pigment.
Is pico laser good for melasma — and can it make melasma worse?
Low-fluence picosecond toning is one of the more studied laser approaches for melasma and can soften it, especially superficial (epidermal) melasma. But melasma is heat-sensitive and over-aggressive settings can cause rebound or post-inflammatory pigmentation — which is why doctor-led, conservative settings, priming and sun protection matter. Melasma is a chronic, relapsing condition: we manage and improve it, we do not cure it.
How many pico toning sessions will I need to see results?
Pico toning works over a course — commonly several sessions spaced roughly 2–4 weeks apart, with maintenance afterwards. Sun spots and freckles often respond faster; melasma is slower and needs ongoing management. Your exact plan is agreed with Dr Nick at your consultation.
Is there any downtime, and does it hurt?
Most people have only mild redness and warmth that settles quickly, so you can usually return to daily life soon after. Discrete spots may darken then flake over a few days. The sensation is typically a mild tingling or “rubber-band” snap; topical comfort measures can be used for sensitive areas.
Is pico toning safe for darker skin tones?
Picosecond toning’s shorter pulse and lower fluence reduce heat and the risk of PIH compared with older lasers, which can make it a more suitable option for higher Fitzpatrick skin types. However, the British Association of Dermatologists notes laser can sometimes worsen pigment or cause lighter patches, more often in skin of colour — so Dr Nick assesses suitability individually, may advise a test patch and priming, and sometimes recommends an alternative such as Cosmelan.
Can pico toning help with dull skin and large pores, not just pigment?
Yes — alongside fading pigment, the gentle photoacoustic action can give skin a brighter, clearer, more refined appearance and supports gradual collagen remodelling over a course of sessions. Results are gradual and individual.
Will the pigmentation come back?
It can, particularly melasma, which is triggered by sun, heat and hormones and is prone to recurrence. Daily broad-spectrum SPF and maintenance sessions are essential to hold results — without sun protection, pigment tends to return. We set this out honestly so you know what to expect.
How much does pico toning cost in Bedford?
Pricing depends on the area treated and your tailored plan and is confirmed at your consultation — we never quote an invented figure. Book a doctor-led assessment and we’ll explain the recommended course and costs.
Pico toning vs Cosmelan vs IPL — which is right for my pigmentation?
They work differently: pico toning is a picosecond laser; Cosmelan is a topical, cream-based depigmentation peel often used for melasma; Lumecca IPL is broadband light, best for discrete sun spots, freckles and redness. For melasma and deeper pigment in darker skin, picosecond toning or Cosmelan is often preferred over heat-driven IPL. Dr Nick recommends the right route — sometimes a combination — at your consultation.

When it isn’t suitable

It is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active tan or recent sunbed use, active skin infection or eczema in the area, recent isotretinoin or other photosensitising medication, or a history of keloid scarring. Dr Nick reviews your full history at consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Picosecond toning has a favourable safety profile when settings are matched to your skin, but no laser is risk-free. Common, temporary effects include redness, mild warmth or stinging, temporary darkening then flaking of spots, and occasional pinpoint scabbing. Important risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma rebound or recurrence, mottled lightening and, rarely, blistering — risks that rise with darker skin and aggressive settings, which is why doctor-led, conservative settings matter. We explain every risk before you consent.
