Ultrasound is an imaging technology that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a real-time picture of structures beneath the skin. This allows us to visualise anatomy that cannot be seen from the surface — including blood vessels, tissue layers and, in many cases, previously placed dermal filler. In aesthetic medicine, this additional information can be particularly valuable when assessing patients before injectable treatments, investigating previous filler or carrying out ultrasound-guided procedures.

What is aesthetic ultrasound?
Aesthetic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the tissues beneath the skin.
A small ultrasound probe is placed against the skin, allowing us to examine structures such as blood vessels, fat compartments, muscle, fascia and previously placed dermal filler.
Unlike HIFU (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound), diagnostic ultrasound does not intentionally heat or damage tissue. Its purpose is to provide information — helping us better understand what lies beneath the skin before or during an aesthetic procedure.
Aesthetic ultrasound vs HIFU — what’s the difference?
Although both technologies use ultrasound waves, they serve very different purposes.
Aesthetic ultrasound imaging is used to visualise structures beneath the skin. It can help identify blood vessels, tissue planes and previously placed filler and can be used to guide certain injectable procedures in real time.
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is an energy-based treatment. It intentionally focuses ultrasound energy at specific tissue depths to generate heat and stimulate tissue contraction and collagen remodelling.
At Rejuvena, these are two completely separate technologies with different purposes.
How aesthetic ultrasound works
The ultrasound probe sends high-frequency sound waves into the tissues. These waves reflect differently depending on the structures they encounter, allowing the ultrasound system to build a real-time image on screen. This means we can examine beneath the surface of the skin rather than relying solely on what we can see or feel. For aesthetic procedures, this can provide useful additional information about vascular anatomy, tissue depth and the location of existing filler.
Facial vascular mapping
Ultrasound can help identify the location and depth of important blood vessels before certain injectable treatments, allowing treatment to be planned with greater anatomical information.
Assessing existing dermal filler
Previous filler is not always exactly where we expect it to be. Ultrasound may help identify filler deposits and their location within the tissues before further treatment is considered.
Filler complications
Where there is swelling, nodules, suspected vascular complications, suspected filler migration or uncertainty about previously placed filler, ultrasound can provide valuable additional information during assessment.
Ultrasound-guided treatment
Where clinically appropriate, ultrasound can be used during treatment to help guide a needle or cannula towards a specific target while visualising the surrounding anatomy in real time.

Traditional aesthetic assessment relies on clinical examination, anatomical knowledge and palpation.
Ultrasound adds another dimension by allowing us to see beneath the skin in real time.
It does not replace clinical judgement or anatomical knowledge, but it can provide additional information that may help us plan and perform certain procedures with greater precision.

Ultrasound examination
A small amount of ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and the ultrasound probe is moved gently across the area being assessed.
Real-time imaging
The structures beneath the skin are viewed in real time, allowing us to assess relevant anatomy, blood vessels, tissue layers or existing filler where visible.
Treatment planning
We explain the findings and how they may influence your treatment plan.
