Understanding the post-pregnancy tummy

A “mummy tummy” isn’t one problem; it’s usually three. Loose skin, stubborn fat and, sometimes, separated muscles each need a different answer, which is why a doctor’s assessment comes first.

What is a “mummy tummy”, and can it be treated without surgery?

A “mummy tummy” (or “mum tum”) is the lay term for the changes the abdomen goes through during and after pregnancy. It is rarely a single issue. Most often, it is a combination of stretched, lax skin that has lost some of its natural elasticity, a layer of stubborn lower-belly fat that lingers even after returning to a stable weight, and, in many women, diastasis recti, the partial separation of the two large abdominal (rectus) muscles down the midline, where the connective tissue called the linea alba is stretched and thinned by the growing uterus and pregnancy hormones.

These are three distinct problems, and they have three different answers. Non-surgical treatments can genuinely improve skin firmness and reduce stubborn fat over a course of sessions, but they cannot close a true muscle separation. That is why, at our Bedford clinic, every “mummy tummy” begins with a doctor-led assessment by Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251), who establishes what is actually driving your concern and is honest about what each option can (and cannot) achieve.

For many women in Bedford, Kempston, Biddenham and the wider Bedfordshire area, the post-pregnancy tummy is the change that lingers longest after everything else has settled. The good news is that mild-to-moderate skin laxity and modest stubborn fat usually respond well to a tailored, non-surgical plan. The honest caveat is that significant excess skin (an “apron”) or true muscle separation is best addressed by specialist physiotherapy or surgery (neither of which we provide), and Dr Nick will tell you plainly which camp you are in.

How we treat it

Non-surgical mummy tummy treatments in Bedford

Once Dr Nick has identified whether skin, fat or muscle is the main driver, your plan may combine one or more of the following non-surgical options. The right combination is tailored to your tummy, and confirmed at your consultation.

Radiofrequency · skin tightening

Radiofrequency skin tightening

Radiofrequency body contouring gently heats the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate new collagen (neocollagenesis), helping lax post-pregnancy skin firm and tighten gradually over a course of sessions. It is a primary option for tummy skin laxity and circumference. Learn more about FormaTM radiofrequency skin tightening.

  • Best for Loose, lax tummy skin & contour
  • Sessions A course, confirmed at consultation
  • Results Build gradually over 2–3 months
RF microneedling

Morpheus8 Burst

RF microneedling delivers bipolar radiofrequency energy through fine needles into the deeper skin, remodelling collagen and improving the firmness, tone and texture of crepey or stretched post-pregnancy skin. It can also help refine the look of stretch-marked skin. Explore Morpheus8 Burst.

  • Best for Skin tone, texture & mild laxity
  • Sessions A course, confirmed at consultation
  • Downtime Short: redness for a few days
Injectable lipolysis

Fat-dissolving injections

For small, stubborn pockets of lower-belly fat that resist diet and exercise, injectable fat dissolving uses deoxycholic acid to break down fat cells, which the body then clears naturally over several weeks. Best suited to localised pockets rather than overall weight loss. See fat-dissolving injections.

  • Best for Small, localised fat pockets
  • Sessions A course, confirmed at consultation
  • Results Build over several weeks

Choosing the right combination for your tummy. Skin laxity and stubborn fat often co-exist, so many plans pair a skin-tightening option with a fat-reduction option. Additional non-invasive tightening such as HIFU or FormaTM skin tightening, or a skin-quality bio-remodeller such as Profhilo for crepey skin, may also be discussed. Crucially, none of these treatments repairs separated abdominal muscles. Not sure which applies to you? Dr Nick will assess and explain at your consultation.

Your journey

What to expect: your treatment journey

1

Doctor-led assessment

Dr Nick examines your tummy to determine whether the concern is skin laxity, stubborn fat, diastasis recti (muscle separation) or, occasionally, a hernia. This diagnosis decides everything, and is the most important step.

2

Your tailored plan

If non-surgical treatment is appropriate, you receive a realistic plan covering the treatment options, number of sessions and likely timeline. If physiotherapy or surgery would serve you better, Dr Nick says so and refers you appropriately.

3

Your treatment course

Body skin-tightening and contouring is delivered as a course of sessions, typically spaced a few weeks apart, by our skin therapist Lana under Dr Nick’s oversight. Exact numbers are confirmed at your consultation.

4

Recovery & aftercare

Most options have little to no downtime: temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling that settles within hours to a couple of days. You will be advised to avoid heat (sauna, hot baths), strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours and to protect treated skin from the sun.

5

Results that build

Skin tightening works by stimulating new collagen, so improvement is gradual, typically becoming visible over 8–12 weeks and continuing to develop for up to a few months after your course. Results are an improvement in firmness, tone and contour, not the surgical removal of excess skin.

Before & after

Realistic results, honestly shown

We never use stock or AI images as if they were our patients. Real before-and-after photos will be added here as patients give written consent. Outcomes vary from person to person, and the images below are placeholders.

Individual results vary. All before-and-after images are published with the patient’s written consent and are unretouched. Treatment improves firmness and contour; it does not repair separated abdominal muscles.

Because a “mummy tummy” can involve skin, fat or muscle in different combinations, your plan (and therefore your price) depends entirely on what Dr Nick finds at your assessment and which option(s) suit you. Candidacy

Who is and isn’t suitable

Likely suitable

Women who are past the early postpartum recovery period (generally several months after birth and, for some protocols, after finishing breastfeeding), at or near a stable target weight, with mild-to-moderate skin laxity and/or modest stubborn lower-belly fat, who understand results are gradual.

Not suitable / assess first

Pregnancy or current breastfeeding (device-dependent), true moderate-to-severe diastasis recti or significant excess skin (better suited to physiotherapy or surgery), an unhealed caesarean, a pacemaker or metal implants in the area (RF contraindication), active skin infection, uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders or keloid tendency.

When it needs a doctor, not a treatment

A bulge along the midline of the upper abdomen can be a hernia (umbilical, incisional or abdominal) rather than a cosmetic concern. Persistent pain, an unexplained lump or other concerning features are always assessed by Dr Nick, who refers you to your GP or a surgeon appropriately rather than treating cosmetically. Persistent muscle separation is managed with physiotherapy; it is not “cured” by aesthetic treatment.

FAQ

Mummy tummy treatment: frequently asked questions

Can you get rid of a mummy tummy without surgery?
Often, yes, to a realistic degree. Non-surgical skin tightening (radiofrequency, RF microneedling) and fat-dissolving can improve loose post-pregnancy skin and reduce small stubborn fat pockets over a course of sessions. They cannot, however, remove significant excess skin or close separated abdominal muscles; those need surgery or physiotherapy. Dr Nick will be honest about which applies to you.
What causes a mummy tummy after pregnancy?
During pregnancy the growing uterus stretches the abdominal skin and pushes the abdominal muscles apart, while pregnancy hormones soften the connective tissue down the midline. The result can be stretched, lax skin, residual lower-belly fat, and in many women a degree of diastasis recti (muscle separation).
Can non-surgical treatment fix diastasis recti (muscle separation)?
No. Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles, and non-surgical aesthetic devices do not repair muscle or fascia. First-line care is specialist postnatal/pelvic-health physiotherapy, and severe cases may need surgical repair. At Rejuvena, Dr Nick assesses for muscle separation and refers you appropriately; we treat the skin and fat components only.
How long after giving birth can I have mummy tummy treatment?
We recommend allowing your body to recover naturally first: generally several months after birth, and for some protocols after you have finished breastfeeding. The exact timing depends on the treatment and your individual recovery, and is confirmed at your consultation.
Does fat dissolving work on the post-baby belly?
It can help with small, localised, stubborn pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. It is not a weight-loss treatment and works best when you are at or near a stable target weight. Larger volumes of fat are not suitable for injectable fat dissolving.
How many sessions will I need and when will I see results?
Body skin-tightening and contouring is delivered as a course, typically a few sessions spaced weeks apart: the exact number is confirmed at your consultation. Because results work by stimulating new collagen, improvement is gradual, usually becoming visible over 8–12 weeks and continuing to develop for a few months afterwards.
Will treatment help loose skin and stretch marks?
Skin-tightening treatments such as RF microneedling can improve firmness and the appearance of texture, and may soften the look of stretch marks, but they do not erase stretch marks completely. For marks specifically, see our stretch mark treatment in Bedford.
Is mummy tummy treatment painful, and is there downtime?
Most options are well tolerated, with sensations of warmth or mild discomfort during treatment. Downtime is usually minimal: temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling that settles within hours to a couple of days. RF microneedling can leave redness for a few days. Full aftercare is provided.
How much does mummy tummy treatment cost in Bedford?
Because every plan is individual, your pricing is confirmed at your consultation; we don’t quote a one-size-fits-all figure for body contouring. Your assessment with Dr Nick carries no obligation to proceed.

Your mummy tummy treatment, led by a doctor

At Rejuvena in Bedford, your post-pregnancy tummy is assessed and overseen by Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director (MBBS, MRCGP, Dip Dermatology). Because a "mummy tummy" can involve loose skin, stubborn fat or separated abdominal muscles, his first job is to identify what is actually driving your concern. Non-surgical treatments are delivered by our skin therapist, Lana, under Dr Nick's oversight. This doctor-led approach means you get honest expectations, a realistic plan for the skin and fat we can safely treat, and a proper referral for anything that needs physiotherapy or surgery instead.

Is it right for you?

Mummy tummy treatment suits women in and around Bedford who are past their early postpartum recovery (generally several months after birth and, for some protocols, after finishing breastfeeding), at or near a stable target weight, with mild-to-moderate skin laxity and/or modest stubborn lower-belly fat, and who understand that non-surgical results are gradual. A consultation with Dr Nick confirms whether skin tightening, fat dissolving or RF microneedling is right for you.

When it isn’t suitable

Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or while breastfeeding (device-dependent), where there is true moderate-to-severe diastasis recti or significant excess skin better suited to physiotherapy or surgery, an unhealed caesarean, a pacemaker or metal implants in the treatment area, active skin infection, uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders or a keloid tendency. If your symptoms suggest a hernia, an unexplained mass or persistent pain, Dr Nick assesses and refers you to your GP or a surgeon appropriately rather than treating cosmetically.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Non-surgical body treatments improve the firmness and contour of skin and reduce small fat pockets; they do not remove significant excess skin or repair separated abdominal muscles. Persistent muscle separation (diastasis recti) is managed with physiotherapy, not cured by aesthetic treatment. All plans are assessed and overseen by Dr Nick. Common, temporary side effects can include redness, warmth, mild swelling, bruising or pinpoint bleeding (with microneedling) for a few hours to a few days.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
