Cellulite is harmless and extremely common — it is not a sign of being overweight or unhealthy. It affects around 80–90% of women across every body type, including slim and athletic ones.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite — medically known as gynoid lipodystrophy and sometimes called “orange-peel” or “cottage-cheese” skin — is a normal, benign change in skin texture, most often on the thighs, buttocks and abdomen. It is the dimpled, uneven surface that appears when subcutaneous fat presses up against the fibrous connective-tissue bands (septae) that tether the skin from below. It is not a disease, not an infection, and not a weight problem. Importantly, cellulite is not the same as cellulitis, which is a bacterial skin infection — the two are entirely different things.
In women these fibrous septae run vertically, perpendicular to the skin, so they pull the surface down while fat lobules bulge up between them — producing the familiar dimpling. In men the septae cross at an angle, which is why men very rarely develop visible cellulite. Because the underlying structure is largely genetic, even slim and active people in and around Bedford can have it. The honest goal of treatment is to improve the appearance and smooth the texture — not to remove it permanently.
Cellulite vs loose skin vs stretch marks
Cellulite
A dimpled, “orange-peel” surface caused by fibrous septae tethering the skin over fat lobules — most often on thighs and buttocks. It is a texture concern, not a volume or laxity one.
Loose skin
Sagging from lost elasticity — common after weight loss, pregnancy or ageing. This is a laxity problem and is addressed by skin-tightening, not cellulite-specific care.
Stretch marks
Linear streaks (striae) where the dermis was stretched and scarred. These are a separate concern covered by our stretch mark treatment in Bedford.
Getting this distinction right matters, because the safest, most effective plan depends on the real cause. At your consultation, Dr Nick examines the area to judge whether your main concern is dimpling, skin laxity, localised fat or a combination — and is honest if your true issue is better treated another way.

Fibrous bands, fat and hormones — the architecture of dimpling
Cellulite is best understood as an architectural feature of the dermis and the fat beneath it. The exact biology is still not fully understood, but the dominant, evidence-backed drivers are well established — and none of them is simply “being overweight”.
Fibrous septae & fat herniation
The leading driver is the fibrous septae — vertical collagen bands at the dermohypodermal junction. In women they run perpendicular to the skin and tether it down, so fat lobules herniate up between them and create dimples. Fat herniation into the dermis is a secondary event, not the root cause — the septal force imbalance comes first.
- Where Thighs, buttocks, abdomen
- Why women Vertical septal orientation
- Note Largely structural & genetic
Hormones, genetics & lifestyle
Oestrogen plays a major role, so cellulite can be more noticeable in higher-oestrogen states such as pregnancy, breastfeeding and long-term combined-pill use. Genetics and female sex set the baseline, while ageing thins the dermis and reduces elasticity. A sedentary lifestyle, diet and sluggish microcirculation or lymphatic drainage can make the appearance more obvious — but none of these is the single cause.
- Hormonal Oestrogen-influenced
- Genetic Strong family tendency
- Ageing Thinner, less elastic dermis
Cellulite grades I–III
Severity is commonly described on the Nürnberger–Müller scale. Grade I: no visible dimpling at rest, but it appears when skin is pinched. Grade II: dimpling visible when standing, but smooth lying down. Grade III: dimpling visible standing and lying down, often with raised and depressed areas. Best results are usually seen in mild-to-moderate (Grade I–II) cellulite with good skin elasticity.
- Grade I Pinch reveals it
- Grade II Visible standing
- Grade III Visible at rest
Can cellulite be cured or removed completely?
No — and any clinic that promises to “get rid of cellulite for good” is not being straight with you. The medical literature is clear that there is no treatment that can completely eliminate cellulite. For most non-surgical options, improvements are gradual and relatively short-lived, which is why a course of sessions plus ongoing maintenance is usually needed. The honest goal is smoother texture and improved skin tone — noticeable improvement, not flawless skin.
Because cellulite is structural and influenced by genetics and hormones, it is best thought of as a chronic, manageable appearance concern rather than something that is cured once and gone. Rapid or excessive weight loss can actually make it look worse by adding laxity and lengthening the septae. The most reliable results come from realistic expectations, a tailored plan, and supporting it with healthy habits. We would rather set that expectation clearly than over-promise.
Your cellulite journey, step by step
Consultation & assessment
Dr Nick examines the area, grades the dimpling and confirms it is genuinely cellulite — ruling out skin laxity, localised fat or other causes. If heaviness, swelling or pain suggest a medical condition such as lipoedema, he will assess and refer you to your GP or the NHS appropriately rather than treat it as cosmetic cellulite.
Your personalised plan
We match the approach to your concern. Where skin tightening and contouring is the priority, options such as EndoContour skin tightening (radiofrequency and EM body contouring) may help. Where localised fat contributes to the contour, fat-dissolving injections may be discussed. The dedicated procedure is detailed on our cellulite treatment page.
A course of treatments
Non-surgical cellulite treatment typically works as a course of multiple sessions, with results building over weeks. Our skin therapist Lana supports you through each session under Dr Nick’s oversight. Downtime is usually minimal — mild redness, warmth or occasional tenderness that settles quickly.
Maintenance & aftercare
This is where results are kept. Staying hydrated, gentle movement to support circulation and lymphatic drainage, avoiding excessive heat immediately after heat-based sessions, and maintaining a healthy diet and activity level all help prolong the improvement. Periodic maintenance sessions keep texture smoother for longer.
Who cellulite treatment suits — and who it doesn’t
It may suit you if
You are bothered by the appearance of dimpling on the thighs, buttocks or abdomen, you have mild-to-moderate cellulite with reasonable skin elasticity, you have realistic expectations, and you are willing to commit to a course plus maintenance alongside healthy habits.
It may not be right if
You are pregnant or breastfeeding, you have an active skin infection, broken skin or dermatitis over the area, or you expect a one-off permanent cure. Some devices are unsuitable with pacemakers or implanted electronic devices, metal implants in the area, or active cancer — confirmed at assessment.
When we assess & refer
If your real concern is significant skin laxity, a volume of fat, or symptoms such as heaviness, swelling or pain that could indicate lipoedema, that is a different problem. Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Dip Dermatology, GMC 6072251) assesses honestly and refers you appropriately rather than treating it as cosmetic cellulite.
Because cellulite is treated with a personalised plan — the right combination of skin tightening, contouring, fat-related steps and the number of sessions varies from person to person — we don’t quote a one-size fee. After Dr Nick has assessed the area, you’ll receive a clear, honest plan and the price for it. No pressure, no invented numbers.
