Understanding anti-wrinkle injections

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine. Who injects it matters as much as what's injected — at Rejuvena, that's always a qualified medical professional.

Dr Nick assessing and marking a patient's face before anti-wrinkle injections at our Bedford clinic

What are anti-wrinkle injections, and how do they work?

Anti-wrinkle injections — such as the clinically-proven brands Nuceiva and Relfydess — use botulinum toxin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. They work by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles: the lines formed by repeated movements such as smiling, frowning or squinting.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medication that must be prescribed and administered by a qualified clinician — incorrect injections by non-medical personnel can lead to complications. At Rejuvena, all treatments are carried out by our qualified medical team, so you're in the safest hands. Common areas include forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet; static lines at rest are treated differently, often with dermal fillers.

What we treat

What anti-wrinkle injections treat in Bedford

At our Bedford clinic, Dr Nick (GMC 6072251) uses anti-wrinkle injections to soften dynamic lines and refine facial balance — from forehead lines and frown ‘11s’ to crow’s feet, jaw slimming and a Nefertiti neck lift. Treatment is tailored to your facial anatomy rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — anti-wrinkle injections in Bedford

Can anti-wrinkle injections prevent wrinkles?
Anti-wrinkle injections can help slow the formation and progression of dynamic wrinkles by reducing the repeated muscle movements that gradually crease the skin. They cannot permanently prevent ageing or stop wrinkles from developing altogether, but regular, well-planned treatment may reduce the deepening of expression lines over time. The aim is not to eliminate movement completely, but to soften excessive muscle activity while preserving natural facial expression.
What age should I start anti-wrinkle injections?
There is no “right” age to start treatment. Some people choose preventative treatment in their late 20s or early 30s when expression lines first begin to appear, while others wait until wrinkles become more noticeable in their 40s, 50s or beyond. The decision depends on your facial anatomy, muscle activity, skin quality and personal goals rather than your age alone. During your consultation, Dr Nick will advise whether treatment is appropriate for you.
Will I look frozen?
A natural result is one of our main priorities. When performed correctly, anti-wrinkle injections should soften lines while allowing you to continue smiling, laughing and expressing yourself naturally. An overly “frozen” appearance is usually the result of excessive dosing or inappropriate treatment planning rather than the medication itself. At Rejuvena, every treatment is individually tailored to achieve a refreshed, natural-looking appearance.
Does treatment hurt?
Most patients describe anti-wrinkle injections as causing only mild discomfort. Very fine needles are used, and each injection lasts only a few seconds. The treatment usually takes around 10–15 minutes, and most people return to work or their normal daily activities immediately afterwards.
Can men have anti-wrinkle injections?
Absolutely. Anti-wrinkle injections are increasingly popular with men who want to soften forehead lines, frown lines or crow’s feet while maintaining a masculine appearance. Male facial muscles are generally stronger than female muscles, so treatment often requires a different dosing strategy to achieve natural-looking results.
Can I exercise after treatment?
We generally recommend avoiding strenuous exercise until the following day. Light daily activities are fine, but vigorous exercise immediately after treatment may increase blood flow and the likelihood of temporary swelling or bruising. Dr Nick will provide personalised aftercare advice following your treatment.
Can I wear makeup afterwards?
It is usually advisable to avoid applying makeup for at least four hours after treatment to minimise the risk of irritation or introducing bacteria into the injection sites. If you do apply makeup later that day, use clean brushes or applicators and avoid rubbing the treated areas.
Can I fly after anti-wrinkle injections?
Yes. Flying does not affect the action of botulinum toxin, and there is no medical requirement to avoid air travel after treatment. If possible, we recommend allowing a few hours after your appointment before flying so that you can comfortably follow the initial aftercare instructions.
Can I drink alcohol after treatment?
It is sensible to avoid alcohol for around 24 hours after treatment, as alcohol can temporarily increase blood vessel dilation and may increase the likelihood of bruising. Drinking alcohol will not affect the long-term effectiveness of your treatment.
Can I have anti-wrinkle injections before a wedding or special event?
Yes, but timing is important. We usually recommend having treatment at least 2–4 weeks before an important event. This allows the full effect to develop and provides time for any small adjustments, if required. We generally discourage first-time treatments only a few days before a wedding, holiday or major event.
Can I stop treatment once I’ve started?
Yes. Anti-wrinkle injections are not addictive, and you can stop treatment at any time. If you choose not to continue, the effects gradually wear off over several months and your muscles return to their normal activity. Your face will simply continue to age naturally—it will not become worse because you stopped treatment.
Can anti-wrinkle injections stop working over time?
Most patients continue to achieve excellent results for many years. In a small proportion of people, repeated exposure may lead to the development of neutralising antibodies, which can reduce the effectiveness of treatment. This appears to be uncommon in aesthetic practice, particularly when treatments are appropriately spaced and the lowest effective dose is used. Dr Nick will always recommend an appropriate treatment schedule to minimise this risk.
What’s the difference between Botox®, Nuceiva® and Relfydess®?
Botox®, Nuceiva® and Relfydess® are all prescription-only botulinum toxin treatments used to soften dynamic wrinkles, such as forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet. They all work by temporarily relaxing selected facial muscles, but they differ in their formulation and clinical characteristics.

Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most established brand and has been used safely in both medical and aesthetic practice for many years. It has a long track record, extensive clinical evidence and predictable results.

Nuceiva® (prabotulinumtoxinA) is another licensed botulinum toxin type A product developed specifically for aesthetic use. Clinical studies have shown it provides results comparable to other established botulinum toxin brands, with similar onset, duration and safety when used appropriately.

Relfydess® (relabotulinumtoxinA) is a newer treatment that uses a ready-to-use liquid formulation rather than requiring reconstitution before injection. Early clinical studies suggest it has a rapid onset of action, with many patients noticing improvement within a few days, and some patients may experience longer-lasting results.

For most patients, the injector’s assessment, experience and treatment plan have a greater influence on the final result than the specific brand used. At Rejuvena, Dr Nick will discuss the available options and recommend the product most appropriate for your facial anatomy, treatment goals and medical history.
What’s the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers?
Although they are often mentioned together, they treat different concerns.

Anti-wrinkle injections relax muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movement, such as forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.

Dermal fillers restore lost volume and support tissues to improve static wrinkles, contour the face and enhance features such as the lips, cheeks and chin.

Many patients benefit from a combination of both treatments, depending on their individual concerns.
Can I combine anti-wrinkle injections with Morpheus8 Burst?
Yes. Anti-wrinkle injections and Morpheus8 Burst complement each other well because they address different aspects of facial ageing. Anti-wrinkle injections reduce muscle activity that causes expression lines, while Morpheus8 Burst remodels collagen and improves skin firmness, texture and laxity. Depending on your treatment plan, these procedures may be performed on the same day or scheduled separately to optimise results.
Can I combine anti-wrinkle injections with Profhilo?
Yes. Profhilo and anti-wrinkle injections work in different ways and are frequently combined. Anti-wrinkle injections soften expression lines, while Profhilo improves skin hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality by stimulating collagen and elastin production. Together, they can produce a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation while maintaining a natural appearance. Dr Nick will recommend the most appropriate treatment sequence during your consultation.
How long do anti-wrinkle injections take to work?
You may begin to notice the effects within 3–5 days, although this varies between individuals. The full result is usually visible after 10–14 days, which is why we recommend planning treatment at least two weeks before an important event. If necessary, Dr Nick can review your results at around two weeks and advise whether any adjustments are appropriate.

Is it right for you?

Anti-wrinkle injections suit adults who want to soften dynamic lines caused by movement — frowning, squinting and raising the brows — while keeping a natural, refreshed look. They are also used medically to ease jaw clenching and excessive sweating.

When it isn’t suitable

Treatment isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions or active infection at the treatment site. Dr Nick reviews your full medical history at consultation to confirm you’re a safe candidate.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Botulinum toxin has an excellent safety record when prescribed and injected by a qualified doctor. Common, temporary effects can include minor redness, swelling, pinpoint bruising or a mild headache, usually settling within a few days. Less common effects such as temporary brow or eyelid heaviness or slight asymmetry are uncommon and resolve as the product naturally wears off. We explain every risk and answer your questions before you consent. Botulinum toxin has been used in medicine for several decades and has one of the most established safety profiles of any injectable treatment when administered by appropriately trained medical professionals.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
