Understanding fat dissolving

Even with a healthy lifestyle and stable weight, small pockets of localised fat can persist. However, not every area of unwanted fullness is the same — and not every patient needs the same treatment.

At Rejuvena, we take an assessment-led approach to facial and body contouring. We consider the amount and distribution of fat, skin quality, tissue characteristics and your underlying anatomy before recommending treatment.

Depending on what we find, treatment may involve conventional fat dissolving injections or an advanced recombinant enzyme treatment with PBSerum.

A defined chin and jawline profile — the contour fat dissolving treatment aims to refine

What are fat dissolving injections?

Fat dissolving injections are non-surgical treatments designed to reduce small, localised areas of unwanted fatty tissue. Rather than being a treatment for general weight loss, they are used to refine specific areas where unwanted fullness persists despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Common concerns include fullness beneath the chin, reduced jawline definition and selected small pockets of body fat.

At Rejuvena, treatment begins with an assessment rather than a predetermined product. This is important because unwanted fullness may result from fat, skin laxity, tissue characteristics or underlying anatomy — and reducing fat is not always the most appropriate solution.

What we treat

What fat dissolving treats

At Rejuvena in Bedford, each fat dissolving injections plan starts with a careful assessment to confirm the concern, suitability and realistic next steps.

Two treatment approaches

Not all fat reduction injections work in the same way

At Rejuvena, we can offer different injectable approaches depending on the tissue being treated and the result we are trying to achieve.

Conventional

Conventional fat dissolving

Designed to target localised fatty tissue through an adipocytolytic mechanism using deoxycholic acid injections. Usually considered for relatively straightforward, small pockets of localised fat where reducing fatty volume is the primary treatment objective. Treatment involves a series of small injections placed systematically throughout the targeted area.

  • May be considered for
  • Small pockets of localised fat
  • Double chin
  • Selected jawline concerns
  • Selected areas of body fat
  • Patients seeking a more accessible treatment option
PBSerum

Recombinant enzyme treatment

PBSerum is an injectable recombinant enzyme treatment containing Lipase PB500, Collagenase PB220 and Lyase PB72K. Rather than relying on conventional adipocytolysis alone, its enzyme system acts on different components of the tissue — lipase targets adipose volume, collagenase acts on altered or fibrotic collagen, and lyase assists tissue permeability and fluid drainage.

PBSerum may therefore be considered where treatment aims extend beyond reducing localised fatty volume to include fibrotic tissue and tissue remodelling.

  • May be considered for
  • Localised fatty tissue
  • Areas with a fibrotic component
  • Facial or body contouring where tissue quality is also relevant
  • Patients where an enzyme-based treatment is considered clinically appropriate

Which treatment should I choose? You don't need to choose before your appointment. Your treatment is recommended following assessment of your anatomy, fat distribution, skin quality, tissue characteristics and treatment goals. The aim is not to sell you the most expensive treatment — it is to determine which approach is most appropriate for the problem we are trying to treat.

Assessment

Is your double chin actually caused by fat?

A double chin or poorly defined jawline is not always simply caused by excess fat. The appearance of the lower face can be influenced by several factors — or a combination of them:

  • Localised submental fat
  • Skin laxity
  • Tissue descent
  • Chin and jaw projection
  • Facial proportions
  • Age-related structural changes

This distinction matters. Reducing fat when skin laxity is the predominant problem may not produce the improvement you are hoping for, and can sometimes make existing loose skin more apparent.

At Rejuvena, we therefore assess your lower-face anatomy rather than simply treating the area that concerns you. Where fat reduction alone is unlikely to provide the best result, we may discuss alternative or complementary treatments aimed at skin tightening or structural support.

How it works

Break down, then eliminate

Fat dissolving injections disrupt targeted fat cells, which are gradually cleared by the body over the following weeks.

Step 1: Dissolve

Targeted fat breakdown

A series of small injections delivers deoxycholic acid or recombinant enzymes into the fat, disrupting the cell membrane so the fat cells dissolve.

  • Areas Chin, jawline, abdomen, flanks
  • Time 20–30 minutes
Step 2: Eliminate

Natural clearance

Over the following weeks, the body's lymphatic system metabolises and removes the broken-down fat for a gradual, natural-looking result.

Your fat dissolving journey: step by step

1

Consultation

We assess your concerns, anatomy, skin quality and tissue characteristics, review your medical history and discuss what you would like to achieve. Importantly, we determine whether unwanted fat is genuinely the main cause of your concern.

2

Personalised treatment plan

If injectable fat reduction is appropriate, we recommend the treatment approach most suited to your individual presentation. We will explain why it has been recommended, the likely number of treatments, expected recovery, potential risks and overall cost before you decide whether to proceed.

3

Treatment

The area is cleaned and the treatment is administered through a series of injections into the targeted tissue. Treatment typically takes around 20–30 minutes depending on the area and treatment being performed.

4

Recovery

Swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising or temporary firmness can occur following injectable contouring treatments. The type and duration of recovery varies according to the treatment used and the area treated. You will receive specific aftercare instructions following your procedure.

5

Results

Changes develop gradually rather than immediately. The degree of improvement and number of treatments required varies according to your anatomy, treatment area, treatment selected and individual response.

Fat dissolving is about contouring, not weight loss. The important question isn't simply whether we can reduce fat — it's whether fat is genuinely causing the concern and whether reducing it will improve the patient's contour.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about fat dissolving in Bedford

What are fat dissolving injections?
Fat dissolving injections are non-surgical injectable treatments used to target small areas of localised fatty tissue. They are intended for contouring rather than general weight loss.
What is PBSerum?
PBSerum is an injectable recombinant enzyme treatment containing Lipase PB500, Collagenase PB220 and Lyase PB72K. The different enzymes act on components of adipose and fibrotic tissue and are used for selected facial and body contouring indications.
Is PBSerum the same as conventional fat dissolving?
No — the treatments work differently. Conventional fat dissolving uses an adipocytolytic approach to target fatty tissue, whereas PBSerum uses a recombinant enzyme system. Which approach is appropriate depends on the area being treated, tissue characteristics and treatment objectives.
Which treatment is better?
Neither treatment is automatically "better" for everyone. The appropriate option depends on what is causing the concern, the characteristics of the tissue and what we are trying to achieve. This is determined during your assessment.
Who is suitable for fat dissolving?
Fat dissolving is generally best suited to adults with a stable weight who have relatively small, localised areas of unwanted fat. Suitability also depends on your anatomy, skin quality, medical history, medications and expectations.
Is fat dissolving a weight-loss treatment?
No. Fat dissolving injections are designed to contour relatively small, targeted areas and should not be considered an alternative to weight loss.
What areas can be treated?
Common concerns include fullness beneath the chin and around the jawline, together with selected small areas of localised body fat. Not every area or type of fullness is suitable for injectable treatment, so the treatment area is assessed before proceeding.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies according to the area being treated, the treatment selected and your individual response. Some patients may benefit from more than one treatment. Your likely treatment course will be discussed during consultation and reviewed according to your response.
What is the downtime?
Downtime varies considerably according to the treatment used and area treated. Swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising and temporary firmness can occur. We will explain the expected recovery associated with the specific treatment recommended for you.
Are the results permanent?
The longevity of your result depends on your lifestyle and future changes in weight. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle is important for maintaining improvements in body and facial contour.
Can fat reduction make loose skin more noticeable?
Yes, in some patients. If an area has significant skin laxity, reducing the underlying fatty volume can make that laxity more apparent. This is one reason we assess skin quality as well as the amount of fat before recommending treatment.
What if my problem is loose skin rather than fat?
If skin laxity is the predominant concern, fat dissolving may not be the most appropriate treatment. Depending on your anatomy and goals, we may instead discuss treatments aimed at skin tightening or remodelling, such as HIFU, Morpheus8 or Forma.
Is treatment safe?
All injectable treatments carry potential side effects and complications. The risks differ according to the product, treatment area and individual patient. Common temporary effects can include swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising and firmness. Less common complications can also occur. Appropriate patient selection, anatomical assessment and injection technique are therefore important. The risks specific to the treatment recommended for you will be discussed before you decide whether to proceed.
How much does fat dissolving cost in Bedford?
Conventional fat dissolving is from £360 per session, priced by area and number of sessions. PBSerum recombinant enzyme treatment pricing is confirmed at your consultation.

Your treatment, within a doctor-led clinic

Fat dissolving and enzymatic contouring at Rejuvena begin with a medical and anatomical assessment. Dr Nick is a GMC-registered GP and Medical Director of Rejuvena, with postgraduate qualifications in dermatology and aesthetic medicine.

Rather than approaching every area of unwanted fullness in the same way, we assess whether the concern is predominantly related to fat, skin laxity, tissue quality or underlying anatomy before recommending treatment. This allows us to advise when injectable fat reduction is appropriate — and equally importantly, when another treatment may provide a better result.

Is it right for you?

Fat dissolving may be suitable if you have a stable weight but remain concerned about a relatively small, localised area of unwanted fat. Good skin quality is also important because reducing fatty volume does not necessarily tighten loose skin. During your consultation, we assess whether fat is genuinely the main cause of your concern and whether reducing it is likely to improve your contour. If it isn't, we will tell you.

When it isn’t suitable

Fat dissolving is not a weight-loss treatment and is not designed to treat large volumes of body fat. Treatment may also be inappropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in the presence of active infection or inflammation within the treatment area, or where certain medical conditions, medications or anatomical factors make treatment unsuitable. Suitability and contraindications also vary between the different injectable products we use. A full assessment is therefore performed before treatment. If injectable fat reduction is unlikely to provide the result you are looking for, alternative options can be discussed.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Fat dissolving and enzymatic contouring are injectable procedures and therefore carry potential side effects and complications. Temporary swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising and firmness can occur following treatment. The nature and duration of these effects vary according to the treatment used, treatment area and individual response. Less common complications can also occur. Careful patient selection, anatomical assessment and appropriate injection technique are therefore important. Before proceeding, we will explain the expected recovery and risks associated specifically with the treatment being recommended for you. You will receive appropriate aftercare guidance and can contact the Rejuvena team if you have concerns following treatment.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
