Understanding scars

Scar tissue is structurally different to normal skin. Laser resurfacing removes damaged tissue and remodels new collagen in its place.

Cool Laser Laser Scar Revision — Rejuvena Clinic Bedford

What is laser scar revision, and how does it work?

Scars form as part of the skin's natural healing after injury, surgery, acne or inflammation. The collagen that repairs a wound is thicker and less flexible than normal skin, leaving a scar that differs in texture, colour and elasticity. Laser scar revision uses the Dermablate Cool Laser™ — an Erbium:YAG laser — to address exactly this.

High-powered, rapid pulses remove the top layers of scar tissue with micrometre-level precision, while stimulating the regeneration of healthier, smoother skin beneath. Because the Er:YAG wavelength minimises heat damage to surrounding tissue, it improves texture, evens pigmentation and promotes collagen remodelling safely — including on darker skin tones — for acne, surgical, traumatic, hypertrophic, keloid and atrophic scars.

Laser scar treatment for the handIn this clip our practitioner guides a laser handpiece precisely over a scar on the back of the hand, resurfacing the marked skin and stimulating fresh collagen as it heals. Hands take a lot of wear, so scars here can feel stubborn and visible, yet they respond well to targeted laser work. At our doctor-led Bedford clinic every scar is assessed in person first, so your treatment is matched to your skin and the scar itself.Book a consultation ›

What our patients say

4.9from 158 Google reviews

As a battle-scarred rugby veteran, I may be considered an unlikely candidate for aesthetic skin treatment. However after many years of suffering venous leg ulceration, treated at considerable time and cost to the NHS, a trusted health professional suggested I try laser treatment to supplement my body's own healing process. Soon after starting treatment at Rejuvena Clinic Bedford, I found remarkably rapid healing of stubborn chronic ulcers and have a very positive view of success over the course of my treatment. Thanks to you, Dr. Nick!

Rejuvena repliedThank you very much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. I’m delighted to hear how much progress you’ve made, particularly after such a long and difficult journey

Your Cool Laser™ scar revision, performed by a doctor-led team

At Rejuvena in Bedford, Cool Laser™ scar revision is doctor-led. Our Medical Director, Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC-registered), assesses your scar type, depth and skin tone and tailors the Dermablate Er:YAG settings to give a safe, realistic plan. Is it right for you?

It suits adults who want to improve the texture, colour and visibility of acne, surgical, traumatic, hypertrophic, keloid or atrophic scars. Because the Er:YAG Cool Laser™ minimises heat damage, it is suitable across Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, including darker tones. It is best for those who understand that scars are improved over a course of typically 3–6 sessions rather than removed entirely.

When it isn’t suitable

It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on active infection, broken skin or an unhealed wound at the treatment site, or where there is a recent tan or sunburn. It may be deferred for those on isotretinoin, with a history of keloid or poor wound healing, photosensitising conditions or medication, or active cold sores in the area. Suitability is confirmed by Dr Nick at consultation, and some very deep scars may not respond completely.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

A topical anaesthetic is applied for comfort, and most people describe only a warm tingling sensation during treatment. Downtime is minimal: redness, mild swelling or slight peeling for a few days is normal, with most resuming normal activities within 24–48 hours. While healing, avoid sun exposure, use the prescribed soothing creams and a high-SPF sunscreen, and avoid harsh products. There is a small risk of temporary pigment change, particularly without diligent sun protection, which is why depth and settings are tailored to your skin tone.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
