Alexandrite vs Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal

Two useful wavelengths with different strengths — and a choice that should follow skin and hair, not a marketing slogan.

Doctor-reviewedPrimary research linkedUpdated 25 Aug 2026
The short answer

755 nm Alexandrite is absorbed strongly by melanin and can be highly effective where dark hair contrasts with lighter, untanned skin. 1064 nm Nd:YAG is less strongly absorbed at the surface and penetrates more deeply, so it is often favoured for darker phototypes. Neither is universally “best”.

755 nm Alexandrite

Strong melanin targeting where contrast is favourable

Alexandrite’s shorter wavelength is strongly absorbed by melanin. In an appropriate patient this can make follicular heating efficient, especially for coarse, dark hair against lighter, untanned skin. The same strong melanin interaction reduces the margin for epidermal heating when skin pigment is higher or when a tan is present.

A split-body blinded study in Fitzpatrick II–III axillae found its tested single 755 nm protocol produced greater reduction than the tested dual-wavelength protocol at 12 months. That is useful device-specific evidence, not proof that 755 nm should be used for every person or body site.

1064 nm Nd:YAG

A wider surface-skin safety margin

Nd:YAG at 1064 nm is absorbed less by epidermal melanin and reaches more deeply. In a randomized trial of Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin, long-pulsed Nd:YAG outperformed the IPL system tested for axillary reduction at six-month follow-up. Participants reported more pain and inflammation on the laser side, though the effects recorded were temporary.

This makes Nd:YAG important for darker skin, not infallible. Conservative parameters, effective cooling, honest tan history and operator judgement still determine whether treatment should proceed.

Blended delivery

Sometimes the useful answer is not either/or

Some systems can deliver both wavelengths or a blend. A randomized study of blended 755/1064 nm energy found a high-Nd:YAG mixture useful in selected darker or tanned skin with lighter hair, balancing hair reduction, epidermal effects and discomfort. A later prospective multicentre study also reported maintained safety and high satisfaction with simultaneous emission, though investigators disclosed manufacturer relationships.

Blending is a tool, not a guarantee of superiority. The ideal ratio and settings remain patient-, device- and area-specific.

A practical comparison

What actually changes the choice

  • Skin phototype and current tan: higher epidermal pigment generally favours a longer wavelength and more conservative settings.
  • Hair colour and calibre: dark, coarse hair is the most useful target; very light hair may not respond whichever wavelength is used.
  • Body area: follicle depth and growth cycle differ.
  • Previous response: shedding, regrowth, side effects and discomfort inform later settings.
  • Device and operator: wavelength is only one part of the treatment system.

The Motus AY at Rejuvena provides both 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG. Consultation and patch testing determine how that capability is used.

I have been visiting the clinic for a few months now for laser hair removal treatments. I first had a consultation and patch test with Lana where she put my mind at ease and made me feel very comfortable. After only a few treatments I can see a clear reduction in both the speed and amount of hair regrowth. I would definitely recommend the clinic to anyone considering laser hair removal. Thank you Lana! 😊
