Understanding Cosmelan

One of the most effective depigmentation systems available — reducing melanin to even out the most stubborn pigmentation.

What is Cosmelan®, and how does it work?

Cosmelan® is a professional depigmentation treatment designed to reduce and eliminate dark spots, melasma and other forms of hyperpigmentation. It works by inhibiting the production of melanin — the pigment responsible for skin colour — lightening dark areas and evening out overall skin tone. It's known for being both highly effective and well tolerated across a wide range of skin tones.

Cosmelan® is a two-phase system. First, a professional-grade Cosmelan® 1 mask — containing azelaic acid, kojic acid, phytic acid and ascorbic acid — is applied in clinic to inhibit melanin and exfoliate. You then continue at home with Cosmelan® 2 maintenance cream, which prolongs results and helps prevent pigmentation returning. At Rejuvena, every Cosmelan journey is guided by a GMC-registered GP with a special interest in dermatology, because pigmentation has many causes that should be assessed first.

How it works

Two phases, lasting results

An intensive in-clinic mask followed by a structured at-home regimen to control melanin.

Phase 1 — In clinic

Cosmelan® 1 mask

A professional mask with azelaic, kojic, phytic and ascorbic acids is applied and left on for several hours (typically 8–12 hours) before you remove it at home.

  • Action Inhibits melanin, exfoliates
  • Targets Melasma, dark spots, PIH
Phase 2 — At home

Cosmelan® 2 maintenance

A maintenance cream used daily, alongside medical-grade sunscreen, prolongs the in-clinic results and helps stop pigmentation reappearing.

  • Essential Daily SPF protection
  • Support Regular follow-up visits

Pigmentation has many causes, so we always assess first. Cosmelan is exceptionally effective for melasma — but the at-home phase and sun protection are what make results last.

During

The Cosmelan® 1 mask is applied in clinic. You'll wear it for the advised time (often 8–12 hours) and remove it at home, then begin your maintenance routine.

After

Expect redness, tightness and some peeling in the days after. Diligent use of Cosmelan® 2 and daily SPF is essential — your tone evens out over the following weeks.

Your Cosmelan depigmentation, led by a doctor

At Rejuvena in Bedford, every Cosmelan journey begins with an assessment by Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology), because pigmentation has many underlying causes that should be diagnosed before any treatment. He confirms whether Cosmelan is right for your skin and tailors the in-clinic mask and at-home regimen to you. Skin therapist Lana then supports your treatment and follow-up care, guiding you through mask removal, the Cosmelan 2 maintenance phase and daily sun protection. This doctor-led approach is what helps your results stay safe, even and long-lasting.

Is it right for you?

Cosmelan suits adults with melasma, sun-related dark spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or generally uneven tone who want a structured, effective depigmentation programme. It is designed to work across a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin, when guided correctly. It is well suited to people who can commit to the at-home maintenance phase and diligent daily sun protection.

When it isn’t suitable

Cosmelan is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have active skin infection, inflammation, eczema or open wounds in the treatment area. It is not suitable if you have a known allergy to any ingredient in the mask (azelaic, kojic, phytic or ascorbic acid) or have recently used isotretinoin. A consultation with Dr Nick is essential to confirm the cause of your pigmentation and your suitability before treatment.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Cosmelan is highly effective and well tolerated, but a settling-in period is normal. In the days after the in-clinic mask you can expect redness, tightness, dryness and some peeling, which gradually improve as your tone evens out over the following weeks. Diligent use of the Cosmelan 2 maintenance cream and medical-grade daily SPF is essential to protect your skin and prevent pigmentation returning. Because pigmentation can have several causes, assessment by a GMC-registered doctor first reduces the risk of rebound or unsuitable treatment.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
