Understanding laser resurfacing

Laser resurfacing precisely removes controlled areas or layers of superficial skin. During healing, the epidermis re-forms and remodelling within the treated skin can improve texture, fine lines and selected types of scarring. The Er:YAG wavelength produces less residual thermal injury than traditional CO₂ resurfacing, allowing precise control over the depth of treatment.

What is laser skin resurfacing, and how does it work?

Laser skin resurfacing uses controlled laser energy to remove microscopic columns or broader areas of superficial skin, depending on the treatment mode selected. As the skin heals, the epidermis re-forms and gradual remodelling can improve surface texture, fine lines, selected scars and signs of sun damage.

At Rejuvena, we use the Dermablate 2940 nm Er:YAG Cool Laser™. This wavelength is strongly absorbed by water within the skin, allowing tissue to be precisely ablated with limited residual thermal injury. Treatment can range from gentle fractional resurfacing to deeper fully ablative resurfacing, with the depth and density selected according to your skin, clinical concern and acceptable recovery time.

Because Er:YAG generally produces less residual thermal injury than traditional CO₂ resurfacing, it may offer a more controlled recovery and a lower risk of some heat-related complications. However, all ablative resurfacing carries risks, including pigmentary change, and treatment must be individually planned — particularly in darker skin tones.

The underlying mechanism and comparison with CO₂ are supported by established Er:YAG principles — see this NCBI clinical overview.

Treatment levels

Three levels of Cool Laser™ resurfacing

Not every patient needs the same depth of resurfacing. At Rejuvena, your treatment is selected according to your skin, the concern being treated, the degree of improvement sought and the recovery time you can accommodate.

Gentle fractional resurfacing

CoolGlow™

Our gentlest “baby” superficial fractional resurfacing treatment is designed to refresh the skin while preserving surrounding untreated tissue to support faster recovery.

  • Best suited for Dullness, early textural change, enlarged pores, very fine lines, mild superficial sun damage and ongoing skin maintenance.
  • Expected downtime Approximately 2–3 days
  • What to expect Temporary redness, sensitivity and light dryness or flaking. A course may be recommended for gradual improvement.
Medium fractional or combination resurfacing

CoolReset™

A more intensive treatment using medium-depth fractional resurfacing or a combination approach, selected according to the concern and treatment area.

  • Best suited for More established uneven texture, fine lines, visible sun damage, selected pigmentation and mild-to-moderate atrophic acne scarring.
  • Expected downtime Approximately 5 days
  • What to expect Redness, mild swelling, sensitivity and visible flaking or bronzing as the skin renews. Residual redness may continue after the initial recovery period.
Deep fully ablative resurfacing

CoolRenew™

Our most intensive resurfacing option, involving controlled full-field ablation for patients requiring greater correction and able to accommodate a longer recovery.

  • Best suited for More established lines, significant photodamage, pronounced textural irregularity and selected deeper scars following careful clinical assessment.
  • Expected downtime Approximately 7–10 days
  • What to expect More pronounced redness, swelling, oozing or crusting during the early healing stage, followed by re-epithelialisation. Residual redness may persist beyond the initial 7–10-day recovery period.

Downtime is approximate and varies according to treatment depth, area, individual healing response and aftercare. Not every treatment level is appropriate for every skin type or concern. Your recommended option will be confirmed following a doctor-led assessment.

The technology

Cool Laser (Er:YAG) and CO₂ resurfacing — understanding the difference

Er:YAG and CO₂ are both established ablative resurfacing technologies, but they interact with tissue differently. The most appropriate treatment depends on the concern, required depth, skin type and recovery time — not simply which laser is described as stronger.

ER:YAG · 2940 NM

Dermablate Er:YAG · 2940 nm (CoolLaser)

The Er:YAG wavelength is very strongly absorbed by water within the skin. This allows precise ablation with relatively limited residual thermal injury and close control over treatment depth.

Potential advantages

  • Precise, controlled ablation
  • Less residual thermal injury
  • Often a more predictable or shorter initial recovery
  • Fractional, combination and fully ablative options
  • May be suitable for a broader range of patients when carefully selected

Considerations

  • Downtime varies from approximately 2–10 days according to treatment intensity
  • Pigmentary change remains possible
  • More intensive treatment is not appropriate for every skin tone
CO₂ · 10,600 NM

CO₂ resurfacing

CO₂ resurfacing creates ablation with a greater surrounding zone of thermal coagulation. This can provide additional tissue contraction but may also result in more prolonged redness, discomfort and recovery.

Potential advantages

  • Effective for deeper resurfacing
  • Greater thermal coagulation and contraction
  • May be appropriate for more established wrinkles or scars

Considerations

  • Recovery may be longer
  • Greater residual thermal injury
  • Increased risk of prolonged erythema and pigmentary change, particularly in darker skin tones

Neither technology is automatically better for every patient. At Rejuvena, the treatment method and depth are selected following an individual assessment of your skin and treatment goals.

The session

Your resurfacing journey — step by step

1

Doctor-led assessment

We assess your skin, medical history, pigmentation risk and treatment goals before recommending CoolGlow™, CoolReset™ or CoolRenew™. We will also discuss realistic improvement, recovery and whether an alternative or combination treatment would be more appropriate.

2

Preparation and anaesthesia

Your skin is carefully prepared before treatment. Topical anaesthetic and cooling may be used to improve tolerability, with the approach adapted to the treatment area and resurfacing intensity.

3

Individually selected treatment

The Dermablate Er:YAG laser is used in fractional, combination or fully ablative mode according to your personalised plan. Treatment time varies depending on the area and level of resurfacing.

4

Early recovery

Redness, warmth, swelling and sensitivity are expected after treatment. Dryness and flaking may follow fractional resurfacing, while deeper fully ablative treatment can involve oozing or crusting during early healing. Detailed written aftercare is provided.

5

Skin renewal and results

Improvements develop as the surface heals and remodelling continues over the following weeks and months. Some patients benefit from one treatment, while others may require a course or combination approach depending on the concern.

I went to see Rejuvena clinic few months ago after reading their reviews online. I was suffering with acne scars since many years and have tried few treatments from elsewhere. I had a consultation with Dr Nick who was very thorough during the consultation and he suggested me few different treatment options. At any time I never felt rushed or pushed to purchase treatments. 6 months fast forward I had laser skin resurfacing, injections and skin care and my skin has never been better. I am very thankful to the Rejuvena clinic to sort out my skin issue once and for all. Thank you very much

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — laser resurfacing in Bedford

Which Cool Laser treatment level is right for me?
Your ideal tier depends entirely on your specific skin concerns, skin type, and how much downtime your schedule permits. During your doctor-led consultation at our Bedford clinic, we will evaluate your skin to recommend the precise path forward:

CoolGlow™ (Tier 1) is best for instant radiance, surface texturing, and fine pore refinement.
CoolReset™ (Tier 2) targets moderate sun damage, distinct age spots, early fine lines, and acne scars.
CoolRenew™ (Tier 3) is reserved for deep structural changes, severe acne or surgical scarring, and advanced aging signs.
How much does laser skin resurfacing cost in Bedford?
Our entry-level fractional skin rejuvenation (CoolGlow™) starts from £250 per session. Advanced combination and fully ablative treatments (CoolReset™ and CoolRenew™) are priced upward based on the total area treated and depth requirements. All precise, transparent costs are confirmed upfront during your comprehensive £50 medical skin assessment. Flexible clinic finance and payment terms are available.
What is the exact downtime for CoolGlow™, CoolReset™, and CoolRenew™?
Because our advanced Dermablate Erbium:YAG technology generates significantly less residual heat damage than historic carbon dioxide (CO₂) systems, your healing timeline is highly controlled:

CoolGlow™ downtime: 2 to 3 days. Expect a mild pink skin flush resembling a very light sunburn.
CoolReset™ downtime: Around 5 days. You will experience moderate redness followed by a light, sandpaper-like surface flaking as dead cells shed.
CoolRenew™ downtime: 7 to 10 days. As a fully ablative deep resurfacing option, the top layer of skin undergoes a complete cell reset. You will follow a strict healing balm protocol provided by our clinic team.
When can I wear makeup after my laser resurfacing session?
To protect your freshly resurfaced skin from irritation or complications, avoid applying makeup for at least 48 to 72 hours following a CoolGlow™ or CoolReset™ session. For deep CoolRenew™ fully ablative treatments, you must wait until the skin has completely closed and healed over (typically 7 to 10 days). Once healed, always use clean brushes and non-comedogenic products.
Is advanced laser skin resurfacing painful?
Most of our Bedford patients describe the sensation as a manageable, localised prickling heat. For gentle resurfacing (CoolGlow™) no numbing or skin cooling is needed. For medium-depth (CoolReset™) and deep (CoolRenew™) procedures, we apply a high-strength topical numbing cream prior to your session to minimise discomfort.
Is the Cool Laser safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, absolutely. Traditional CO₂ lasers carry a significant risk of Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker individuals. Because our Erbium:YAG laser operates at a highly precise 2940nm wavelength, it bypasses unnecessary thermal injury, making CoolGlow™ safer for all Fitzpatrick skin types. However, CoolReset™ and CoolRenew™ need to be tailored according to your skin type and will be discussed with you during the consultation.
How many laser sessions will I need to see results?
CoolGlow™: Visible, radiant results appear after just one session, though a short maintenance course of 3 treatments is recommended for a continuous “glass skin” effect.
CoolReset™: Drastic texturing improvements are evident in 1 to 2 sessions.
CoolRenew™: Designed as a single, high-impact, transformational procedure. Deeper collagen rebuilding continues beneath the skin surface for several weeks following your session.
Who is not suitable for laser skin resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have active cold sores or open skin infections in the target zone, or have a recent sun tan or sunburn. It is also contraindicated if you have taken oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the past 6 to 12 months or possess a clinical history of keloid scarring. Your complete safety profile will be verified by Dr Nick during your initial consultation.

Your Cool Laser skin resurfacing, performed by a doctor-led team

Cool Laser™ resurfacing at Rejuvena is medically assessed and clinically overseen by Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director, who holds a Diploma in Dermatology and a Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine. Your skin, medical history, pigmentation risk and treatment goals are assessed before CoolGlow, CoolReset™ or CoolRenew™ is recommended. Treatment is then performed by the appropriately trained member of the clinical team according to the indication and resurfacing intensity. This doctor-led pathway allows treatment depth, settings, aftercare and follow-up to be planned around the individual patient rather than applying the same resurfacing protocol to everyone.

Is it right for you?

Cool Laser™ resurfacing may be appropriate for adults wishing to improve fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores, selected scars or superficial sun damage. The three treatment levels allow the intensity and recovery period to be tailored to the concern and the degree of improvement sought. Er:YAG resurfacing produces less residual thermal injury than traditional CO₂ resurfacing, but suitability still depends on skin type, pigmentation history, medical factors and the proposed treatment depth. Not every resurfacing level is appropriate for every patient, particularly where there is a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

When it isn’t suitable

Cool Laser™ resurfacing is not performed over an active skin infection, active cold sore, open wound, significant inflammation, recent sunburn or recently tanned skin. Elective resurfacing is not undertaken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Additional caution or postponement may be required if you have a history of abnormal scarring, recurrent cold sores, poor wound healing, pigmentary complications or certain inflammatory, immune-related or photosensitive conditions. Current or recent isotretinoin use and any medication that may affect healing or skin sensitivity must also be disclosed. Suitability is confirmed only after an individual consultation and medical assessment.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Cool Laser™ resurfacing creates a controlled injury to the skin, and the expected response depends on whether CoolGlow, CoolReset™ or CoolRenew™ is performed. Treatment depth, density and aftercare are tailored to reduce avoidable risk while achieving an appropriate clinical effect. Expected temporary effects include redness, warmth, tenderness, swelling, dryness, bronzing, flaking and increased skin sensitivity. Deeper fully ablative resurfacing may also cause oozing and crusting during the early healing stage. Initial visible recovery is approximately 2–3 days for CoolGlow, around five days for CoolReset™ and approximately 7–10 days for CoolRenew™, although redness or sensitivity may persist for longer. Less common complications include infection, cold-sore reactivation, acne or milia flare, prolonged redness, delayed healing, persistent hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, textural change, demarcation and scarring. Pigmentary change is more likely in darker skin tones and in patients with a previous history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. You will receive treatment-specific aftercare covering cleansing, moisturisation, sun protection, makeup and the temporary avoidance of activities or products that may irritate the healing skin. Please contact the clinic promptly if you develop increasing pain, spreading redness, marked swelling, blistering, pus, fever or any other unexpected symptoms.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
