Understanding thread veins

Small, visible veins can affect confidence — and the right removal method depends on the vein and where it is.

Thread Vein Removal — Rejuvena Clinic Bedford

What is thread vein removal, and how does it work?

Thread vein removal is a treatment that targets the small, visible veins — also called spider veins or broken capillaries — that appear on the face and body. These tiny dilated blood vessels are treated using light, laser or a fine injection, which seals or collapses the vein so the body gradually absorbs it, leaving clearer-looking skin.

There is no single best method — it depends on the vein's size, depth and location. At Rejuvena in Bedford we offer three modalities so we can match the right one to you: Nd:YAG laser for deeper or larger veins on the face and body, Lumecca™ IPL for facial thread veins and redness, and microsclerotherapy for leg veins. Every treatment is led by a GMC-registered GP with a special interest in dermatology, and our options are suitable for a wide range of skin types.

Our methods

Three ways to treat thread veins

We choose — or combine — the right modality for your veins and skin type.

Nd:YAG laser

Deeper & larger veins

A precise wavelength penetrates the skin to target and collapse the vein, which the body then absorbs. Targets veins without damaging surrounding tissue — for face and body.

Lumecca™ IPL

Facial thread veins

Broad-spectrum light is absorbed by the blood vessels, heating and collapsing them so the body clears them naturally. Gentle, with minimal discomfort — and great for facial redness too.

Microsclerotherapy

Leg thread veins

A minimally invasive option where a fine sclerosing solution is injected into the vein, causing it to seal and fade over time — ideal for leg thread veins.

Thread veins respond to different tools depending on whether they're on the face or legs, and how deep they sit. Having laser, IPL and microsclerotherapy under one roof means we can choose the right one rather than forcing a single approach.

Microsclerotherapy for leg thread veinsWatch microsclerotherapy in action: a very fine needle delivers a medical sclerosant solution directly into the leg's thread veins, prompting them to collapse and gradually fade from view. It's a precise, doctor-led approach to the fine red and purple vessels that creams and lasers often can't reach. At our Bedford clinic each treatment is tailored to your skin and the pattern of veins, so care stays safe, considered and genuinely effective.Book a consultation ›

Is it right for you?

Thread vein removal suits adults bothered by small, visible veins, spider veins or broken capillaries on the face or body, as well as leg thread veins best addressed with microsclerotherapy. It is a good option if you want a tailored plan that matches the right modality to your vein type and skin, and our methods are suitable for a wide range of skin types. The most suitable approach is confirmed at your consultation.

When it isn’t suitable

It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have an active skin infection, inflammation or significant tan over the area to be treated. Laser and IPL may not be appropriate for very recently sun-exposed skin or with certain photosensitising medications, and microsclerotherapy is unsuitable for those with a history of deep vein thrombosis, clotting disorders or known allergy to sclerosing agents. Larger or symptomatic varicose veins fall outside this treatment and may require onward referral; Dr Nick will advise at consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

All treatments are led by a GMC-registered GP with a special interest in dermatology, and most people feel only mild discomfort during quick, well-tolerated sessions. Downtime is minimal: temporary redness, mild swelling or slight bruising can occur and usually settles within days. Treated veins are gradually absorbed by the body over the following weeks, and some veins clear in one session while others need a short course. Diligent sun protection afterwards is important to support healing and protect your results.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
