“Acne scar removal” is a common search term, but it isn’t fully accurate. Atrophic acne scarring can be visibly and measurably improved with the right treatment matched to the right scar type — it cannot be made to disappear completely. Anyone promising total, permanent removal is not being honest with you.
What is acne scarring, and why can’t it be fully removed?
Most acne scarring is atrophic — a loss of collagen and tissue left behind where an inflamed spot damaged the deeper skin as it healed. That damaged collagen structure does not simply regenerate back to its original state, which is why no laser, peel or needling device can promise complete removal. What every evidence-based treatment can do is stimulate new collagen, resurface the surface texture and soften the visible depth of the scar — a genuine, often significant improvement, but a management process rather than a cure.
There are three common shapes of atrophic scar — ice-pick (narrow and deep), boxcar (wider with sharply defined edges) and rolling (broad with a sloping, wave-like edge) — and they don’t all respond to the same treatment in the same way. At Rejuvena Laser & Aesthetic Clinic in Bedford, your scars are examined by Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251) before any treatment plan is agreed, so the approach is matched to what is actually on your skin rather than a one-size-fits-all package. If inflamed breakouts are still present, start with our acne and scarring guide and active-acne assessment first.

Which treatment suits which scar type
Rejuvena offers a portfolio of acne-scar treatments rather than a single device, because different scars — and different combinations of scars on the same face — respond to different technologies. Dr Nick recommends the right option, or combination, for you.

Cool Laser™ Er:YAG scar revision — for deeper texture change
The Cool Laser™ Er:YAG laser is our main resurfacing option for atrophic acne scarring, particularly boxcar and rolling scars and generally uneven, pitted texture. It removes fine layers of skin in a controlled way and stimulates collagen remodelling beneath, which softens the sharp edges and depth of a scar over a course of sessions. It is the parent scar-revision treatment this page sits alongside.
- Best for Boxcar & rolling scars, uneven texture
- Mechanism Er:YAG ablative & collagen-remodelling laser
- Sessions Course length confirmed after assessment and reviewed
- Downtime Redness, swelling, mild peeling for days
SkinPen® microneedling — for shallower, widespread scarring
SkinPen® microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries that trigger new collagen and elastin, gradually improving overall texture, refining pore appearance and softening shallower scarring — often well suited to widespread, milder atrophic scarring or as a maintenance treatment between more intensive sessions.
- Best for Shallow, widespread scarring & texture refinement
- Mechanism Collagen induction therapy (micro-needling)
- Sessions Course length confirmed after assessment and reviewed
- From £250 per session
Morpheus8 Burst — RF microneedling for selected deeper texture
Morpheus8 Burst combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to remodel collagen at controlled depths. It may improve selected rolling or mixed-texture scars, but it does not mechanically release strong fibrous bands. Truly tethered scars may need subcision from an appropriately trained specialist; Rejuvena does not currently provide subcision and will refer when that is the more suitable route.
- Best for Selected rolling or mixed-texture scars after assessment
- Mechanism RF microneedling (deeper thermal + mechanical effect)
- Sessions Usually a short course, confirmed at consultation
- Downtime Redness/swelling for a few days
BioRePeel & Dermalux LED — supporting skin quality and marks
BioRePeel is a bio-exfoliating peel that can refine surface texture and post-acne marks with little to no downtime, and is sometimes used between more intensive sessions. Dermalux LED phototherapy supports skin healing, calms inflammation and can be paired after laser or microneedling to aid recovery. Neither replaces laser or microneedling for true pitted, atrophic scarring, but both support the overall plan.
- Best for Post-acne marks, texture support, recovery aid
- Mechanism Bio-exfoliation (BioRePeel) & LED phototherapy (Dermalux)
- Downtime Minimal to none
- Role Complementary — confirmed at consultation
Your acne scar treatment journey in Bedford
Doctor-led scar assessment
Dr Nick examines your scarring in good light, identifies whether it is predominantly ice-pick, boxcar, rolling or a mixed pattern, checks whether acne is still active, and assesses your skin tone and history. This is what determines your recommended treatment or combination — not a fixed package.
Active acne is addressed first
If acne is still active, that is treated or brought under control before scar-revision treatment begins — treating scars while acne is still inflamed risks creating new scarring during the process.
A tailored, honest plan
You are given a clear written plan explaining which treatment (or combination — for example laser plus microneedling) is recommended, how many sessions to expect, realistic likely improvement, and pricing where it can be confirmed in advance.
Treatment sessions
Sessions are delivered by the doctor-led team, with comfort measures such as topical numbing used where appropriate. Sensation and downtime vary by treatment — laser resurfacing involves more visible recovery than microneedling or BioRePeel.
Recovery & aftercare
You’ll be given aftercare instructions specific to your treatment — sun protection, gentle skincare and avoiding picking are consistent across all of them, because sun exposure and picking can worsen pigmentation and scarring.
Course & realistic review
Improvement builds gradually over a course of sessions as collagen remodels. At review, Dr Nick assesses progress honestly and adjusts the plan — including whether a different or combined treatment would now serve you better.
Patients are often searching for “acne scar removal” — I’d rather tell you honestly what improvement to expect from the start than promise something no treatment can deliver. We match the technology to the scar, and we’re upfront when a deep scar will need more than one approach.
Matching the treatment to your scar type — honestly
There is no single “best” acne scar treatment — the right choice depends on the scar. Here is an honest guide to how our options compare, so you understand why Dr Nick may recommend one, or a combination, for you.
Ice-pick & deep boxcar scars
Deep, narrow ice-pick scars often respond poorly to resurfacing alone. TCA CROSS or punch techniques may be more appropriate for selected scars; these are not currently provided at Rejuvena, so Dr Nick will explain when specialist referral is the more honest option. Broader boxcar texture may suit cautious laser or microneedling after assessment.
Rolling & tethered scars
Rolling scars can combine surface texture with fibrous bands beneath the skin. Laser or RF microneedling may improve texture and collagen, but strong tethering may need subcision, which Rejuvena does not currently offer. We will refer rather than imply that a device can release every tethered scar.
Shallow, widespread scarring
Milder, more generalised texture change often responds well to a course of SkinPen microneedling, with BioRePeel and Dermalux LED supporting skin quality between sessions — a gentler route with less downtime.
Deep or mixed scarring frequently needs a combination approach rather than one device alone. Your exact plan — which treatments, in what order, how many sessions — is agreed with Dr Nick at your consultation, not decided in advance of seeing your skin.
Candidacy, safety & honest limitations
Acne scar treatment suits adults with atrophic (indented) acne scarring — ice-pick, boxcar, rolling or a mixed pattern — whose active acne is settled or well controlled, and who want a realistic, doctor-assessed improvement in texture and depth rather than a guaranteed “fix.”
It is not suitable for everyone, and not always straight away. Treatment is usually deferred while acne is still actively inflamed, during pregnancy or breastfeeding for laser and RF options, and over active skin infection in the treatment area. Current or recent isotretinoin must be discussed with Dr Nick: timing depends on the proposed procedure, dose, healing history and advice from the prescriber rather than a blanket waiting period. A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring needs careful, conservative assessment.
Honest limitations. No treatment can remove atrophic acne scarring completely. Deep ice-pick scars may need TCA CROSS or punch techniques, and strongly tethered rolling scars may need subcision; Rejuvena does not currently provide those procedures and will refer when they are more appropriate. BioRePeel and Dermalux can support post-acne marks, skin quality or recovery, but they do not rebuild deep structural scars. Darker skin tones also carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation after aggressive resurfacing, so settings are conservative and a test area may be advised.
Any atypical or unusual skin change in the treatment area is assessed by Dr Nick and referred appropriately, never treated over.

As a battle-scarred rugby veteran, I may be considered an unlikely candidate for aesthetic skin treatment. However after many years of suffering venous leg ulceration, treated at considerable time and cost to the NHS, a trusted health professional suggested I try laser treatment to supplement my body's own healing process. Soon after starting treatment at Rejuvena Clinic Bedford, I found remarkably rapid healing of stubborn chronic ulcers and have a very positive view of success over the course of my treatment. Thanks to you, Dr. Nick!
