Understanding skin boosters

Skin boosters are not fillers. They are regenerative micro-injections that improve the quality of your skin itself — hydration, firmness and texture — rather than adding volume.

Dr Nick administering a doctor-led skin-booster injection at Rejuvena Clinic, Bedford

What are skin boosters, and how do they work?

“Skin booster” is an umbrella term for a series of fine micro-injections designed to improve skin quality directly, rather than to fill a line or add volume to a feature. At Rejuvena in Bedford we offer three doctor-led regenerative options — Profhilo, polynucleotides and Hyaluronic Acid based Skin Boosters — each using a different active ingredient and mechanism, so your plan is matched to your skin and goals rather than sold as a single one-size-fits-all product.

All three work by prompting your own skin to repair and renew itself. Profhilo uses a highly purified hyaluronic acid to hydrate and bio-remodel; polynucleotides use purified, fragmented salmon or trout DNA to stimulate fibroblasts and rebuild collagen; hyaluronic acid based skin boosters deliver injectable hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin and improve its quality from within. Every treatment begins with a face-to-face consultation and medical assessment with Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251), so suitability, allergies and medical history are reviewed before any injecting takes place.

Profhilo vs polynucleotides vs HA skin boosters: what’s the difference?

Three different regenerative mechanisms for three different profiles. Bio-remodelling versus DNA-fragment tissue repair versus deep hyaluronic-acid hydration — your consultation confirms which suits you, or whether a combination is best.

Looking for something different? Sculptra rebuilds deeper collagen for facial volume rather than surface skin quality, and microneedling is a device-based (non-injectable) way to stimulate collagen — Dr Nick can advise which best fits your goals at consultation.

Honest advice

Are skin boosters right for you?

Skin boosters are a category, not a single product — the right one (or combination) depends on your skin and goals, confirmed at consultation.

Skin boosters may suit you if

You want to improve hydration, firmness, texture or overall glow without adding volume to your face; you are noticing dullness, crepiness or fine lines; or you want a doctor-led, regenerative option rather than a synthetic filler.

A different treatment may suit you better if

You want to add volume or reshape contours — Sculptra or a dermal filler may be more appropriate; you want to soften dynamic expression lines, which anti-wrinkle injections address; or you have a relevant allergy (for example, a fish allergy rules out polynucleotides specifically, though not Profhilo or hyaluronic acid based skin boosters).

What we always confirm first

Your full medical history, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, allergies and current medication, and your goals — before any treatment, so the option offered is genuinely matched to you rather than assumed.

The session

What to expect — your skin booster journey in Bedford

1

Consultation & assessment

Dr Nick reviews your medical history and assesses your skin, then confirms which skin booster — or combination — genuinely suits your goals.

2

Your treatment session

Topical numbing cream is applied where helpful, and fine needles or a cannula are used for the micro-injections. Sessions typically take around 30–45 minutes depending on the option chosen.

3

Aftercare

Mild swelling, redness, small bumps or occasional bruising at the injection points are common and usually settle within a few days. You will be given clear aftercare guidance.

4

Results & review

Improvement builds gradually over the following weeks as your skin responds. A short course of sessions is usually recommended for the best result, reviewed with your clinician.

Skin boosters aren’t one product — they’re a category. My job at consultation is to work out which mechanism actually matches your skin, rather than default to whichever we happen to sell most of.

I’ve had filler on a few occasions over the years with various practitioners, the experience at Rejuvena has been the best and the most comfortable! I felt fully briefed on both procedures and Dr Nick demonstrated great attention to detail. I was particularly reassured by the ultrasound carried out to avoid injecting into any veins and vessels around the temple area. Dr Nick contacted me the next day to check how I was, other practitioners I’ve visited have never followed up. I’m really delighted by the whole experience and with the results. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

After making some wrong cosmetic decisions over the years, I wanted to prioritise going to somewhere experienced, knowledgeable and skillful and rejuvena clinic is definitely that! I've had filler dissolving and massater Botox with Dr nick, both of which I was very nervous about but they have both gone perfectly. Far better than experiences I've had elsewhere. Looking forward to other treatments in the future. Thank you again

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — skin boosters in Bedford

What is a skin booster?
A skin booster is a series of fine micro-injections designed to improve the quality of your skin directly — hydration, firmness and texture — rather than to add volume like a dermal filler. At Rejuvena we offer three doctor-led options: Profhilo, polynucleotides and Hyaluronic Acid based Skin Boosters.
What is the difference between Profhilo, polynucleotides and HA skin boosters?
Profhilo uses stabilised hyaluronic acid to hydrate and bio-remodel the skin. Polynucleotides use purified salmon or trout DNA fragments to stimulate fibroblasts and repair tissue — particularly effective for crepey under-eye skin and scarring. Hyaluronic acid based skin boosters deliver injectable hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin and improve its quality. They work differently and are sometimes combined — Dr Nick advises which suits you at consultation.
Are skin boosters the same as dermal fillers?
No. Dermal fillers add volume to a specific area on the day. Skin boosters spread through the skin to improve its quality, hydration and firmness rather than reshaping a feature, and results build gradually rather than appearing instantly.
How much do skin boosters cost in Bedford?
Profhilo is from £300 per session. Polynucleotides are from £300 per session, or £795 for a package of 3 sessions. Hyaluronic acid based skin boosters are from £300. Your exact plan is confirmed at consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies by treatment and by your skin. Profhilo is usually a course of two sessions around four weeks apart; polynucleotides and hyaluronic acid based skin boosters are typically given as a short course, with the exact number confirmed once Dr Nick has assessed your skin and goals.
Is there any downtime with skin boosters?
Downtime is generally minimal across all three options. You may notice mild redness, swelling, small bumps or occasional bruising at the injection points, which usually settles within a few days.
Who shouldn’t have a skin booster?
Skin boosters are generally not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection or inflammation at the treatment site, or for anyone with a relevant allergy — for example, polynucleotides are not suitable if you have a fish allergy, as they are derived from purified salmon or trout DNA. Caution is also needed with bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication. Suitability is always confirmed individually at consultation.
How do I know which skin booster is right for me?
A face-to-face consultation with Dr Nick is the starting point for every patient. He reviews your medical history, assesses your skin and concerns, and recommends the option — or combination — that genuinely matches your goals, rather than a single default product.

Is it right for you?

Skin boosters suit adults who want to improve the quality of their skin — hydration, firmness, texture or radiance — rather than add volume or relax muscles. They are a good option for people noticing dullness, crepiness, fine lines or early loss of firmness who want a doctor-led, regenerative approach. The right option (or combination) is confirmed with our clinician at consultation.

When it isn’t suitable

Skin boosters are generally not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over active infection or inflammation at the treatment site, or where a relevant allergy exists — for example, polynucleotides are unsuitable if you have a known fish allergy, as they are derived from purified salmon or trout DNA. Caution is needed with bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication. Anyone wanting an instant, volumising result may be better suited to a dermal filler or Sculptra. Suitability for each option is reviewed individually during your medical consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

When performed by an experienced, doctor-led clinician, skin boosters have a strong safety profile and minimal downtime. The most common effects are temporary and mild — slight swelling, redness, tenderness, small bumps or bruising at the injection sites — which usually settle within a few days. Topical numbing cream is used for comfort, and fine needles or a cannula are used throughout. Each option (Profhilo, polynucleotides, HA skin boosters) has its own specific safety profile, discussed fully at consultation before you decide.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
