Understanding sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is a reactive skin state (not a single diagnosis) driven by an impaired skin barrier that loses moisture and over-responds to triggers. It is managed and calmed, not cured.

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is a reactive skin state in which a weakened or impaired skin barrier loses moisture and over-responds to everyday triggers, causing stinging, burning, tightness, redness and flaking. The outer layer of skin, the stratum corneum, works like bricks and mortar: skin cells held together by lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. When that mortar is depleted, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) rises, the skin dries out, and irritants and allergens penetrate more easily, so the skin reacts.

Crucially, sensitive skin overlaps with (but is distinct from) diagnosed conditions such as eczema, rosacea and contact dermatitis. At Rejuvena in Bedford our role is to calm and support the barrier of reactive skin, and to recognise when reactivity is actually a medical skin condition that needs diagnosis. That distinction is made by a doctor, not guessed at with shop products.

Sensitive vs. dry vs. dehydrated skin: the difference

Dry skin is a skin type that lacks oil (lipids). Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition where the skin lacks water; it can affect any skin type, including oily skin. Sensitive skin describes skin that reacts; it stings, flushes or feels tight in response to products, weather or friction, usually because the barrier is impaired. Many people have a combination: dry, dehydrated and reactive at once. Telling them apart guides the right, gentle plan.

Signs your skin barrier may be compromised

Common signs include skin that stings or burns when you apply products that used to be fine; persistent tightness even after moisturising; new flaking, roughness or rough patches; increased redness or blotchiness; and skin that feels reactive to heat, cold or wind. If these appear after starting a new active (a retinoid or acid), or after over-exfoliating, the barrier is usually the cause.

What causes it & how we calm it

What causes sensitive & reactive skin?

Reactivity nearly always comes back to a barrier that lets water out and irritants in. We reduce the irritant load, support barrier recovery and (where needed) diagnose what is really going on. Treatments are supportive and soothing; your at-home routine does much of the work.

Triggers

Common everyday triggers

Cold weather, wind and low humidity; harsh or fragranced cleansers; over-exfoliation and strong actives (retinoids and high-strength acids); hard water; sun exposure; and stress all strip or stress the barrier. Hot showers and surfactants like sodium lauryl sulphate are frequent culprits. Removing or reducing these is the first, most effective step.

  • Mechanism Higher TEWL & lipid loss
  • Worsened by Fragrance, over-exfoliation

Dermalux LED phototherapy

Our primary soothing modality. Dermalux LED light therapy uses clinically validated red (~633nm) and near-infrared (~830nm) wavelengths to calm inflammation and support skin recovery. It is non-thermal, non-invasive and well tolerated by sensitive and inflammatory skin. We frame it honestly as supportive; it helps calm reactivity over a tailored course; it is not a cure for any underlying condition.

Gentle, barrier-safe

Gentle facials & barrier support

We choose gentle facials and medical peels specifically for reactive skin, never an aggressive peel on a compromised barrier. The value is a conservative, professionally selected protocol plus honest routine advice: a bland, fragrance-free cleanser, lukewarm water, a ceramide-rich emollient reapplied through the day and daily broad-spectrum SPF. It begins with a professional skin analysis to identify your triggers first.

When sensitivity signals something more: when Dr Nick assesses & refers

Persistent or worsening redness, rashes or reactivity can be a sign of a diagnosable skin condition rather than simple barrier impairment. Central-face flushing with papules and pustules may be rosacea, which causes persistent facial redness; flaring, itchy, broken skin may be eczema or contact dermatitis; a red, bumpy rash around the mouth may be perioral dermatitis. A sudden change, a non-healing patch or an atypical lesion always warrants a closer look. As a GMC-registered doctor with a Diploma in Dermatology, Dr Nick assesses whether your sensitivity is barrier-related or a medical condition, and refers you appropriately rather than treating cosmetically when that is not right for you.

What to expect

Your sensitive-skin journey at Rejuvena Bedford

1

Doctor-led consultation & skin analysis

We start by listening to your history and triggers, then assess your skin. Dr Nick rules a medical condition (eczema, rosacea, dermatitis) in or out. A professional skin analysis maps where your barrier needs support.

2

Patch test & gentle plan

Reactive skin warrants caution, so we patch-test where appropriate and start conservatively. We never apply an aggressive peel to a compromised barrier. Your plan is built around calming the skin first.

3

Calming in-clinic treatment

This may include a course of Dermalux LED phototherapy to reduce inflammation and support recovery, and a gentle, barrier-respecting facial. A course is tailored at your consultation: benefit builds gradually.

4

Your at-home barrier routine

Much of the result comes from home: a bland, fragrance-free cleanser, lukewarm water, a ceramide- or glycerol-based emollient reapplied through the day, daily SPF, and pausing strong actives while the barrier recovers.

5

Review & maintenance

We review progress: barrier repair is gradual, typically showing over 2–6+ weeks, with the stratum corneum renewing roughly every 28 days. Flares can recur if triggers return, so we plan realistic maintenance, not a one-off fix.

Before & after

Calmer, more resilient skin over a managed course

Sensitive skin is improved and better controlled, not cured. The placeholders below show the kind of change we aim for (reduced redness and reactivity) over a tailored course alongside a corrected routine.

Before: reactive, easily-flushed skin with dryness and tightness.
After: calmer, less reactive skin following a managed course: individual results vary.

I recently had a Diamond Glow Facial and was very pleased with the experience. The treatment left my skin feeling deeply cleansed, refreshed, and smooth. My face looked brighter after the facial, and my skin felt much cleaner and healthier. Lana was professional and made me feel comfortable throughout the treatment. I would recommend this facial to anyone looking to give their skin a thorough cleanse and refresh.

FAQ

Sensitive skin FAQs in Bedford

What’s the difference between sensitive, dry and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin is a type that lacks oil; dehydrated skin is a temporary condition that lacks water and can affect any skin type, including oily skin; sensitive skin reacts: stinging, flushing or feeling tight in response to triggers, usually because the barrier is impaired. Many people have all three at once, which is why a proper assessment guides the right plan.
How do I know if my skin barrier is damaged?
Tell-tale signs include products that suddenly sting or burn, persistent tightness even after moisturising, new flaking or rough patches, and increased redness or reactivity to heat, cold and wind. This often follows over-exfoliation or starting a strong active such as a retinoid or acid.
What causes skin to suddenly become sensitive or reactive?
Usually a stressed barrier: over-exfoliation or strong actives, harsh or fragranced cleansers, hard water, hot showers, cold or windy weather, low humidity and sun exposure all raise water loss and let irritants in. Reducing these triggers is the single most effective first step.
Is LED light therapy safe for sensitive and reactive skin?
Yes. Dermalux LED is non-thermal, non-invasive and well tolerated by sensitive and inflammatory skin, using red (~633nm) and near-infrared (~830nm) light to calm inflammation. Caution applies if you have light sensitivity, take photosensitising medication or are pregnant, so we check suitability at your consultation.
Can sensitive skin be cured?
No. Sensitive, reactive skin is managed and calmed, not cured, especially where the barrier tendency is chronic or genetic. With the right gentle treatment and a corrected routine it can become noticeably more resilient and better controlled, but flares can return if triggers come back.
Which facials are safe if I have sensitive or easily-flushed skin?
Only gentle, barrier-respecting facials and conservative medical peels chosen specifically for reactive skin. Aggressive peels are not appropriate on a compromised barrier. We patch-test where needed and select the mildest effective option.
Is sensitive skin the same as rosacea or eczema?
Not necessarily. They overlap, but rosacea (persistent central-face flushing with bumps), eczema and contact or perioral dermatitis are diagnosable conditions. Dr Nick assesses whether your reactivity is simple barrier impairment or a medical condition, and refers or treats accordingly.
How long does it take to repair a damaged skin barrier?
Improvement is gradual, typically over 2–6+ weeks, as the outer skin layer renews roughly every 28 days and barrier lipids recover slowly. In-clinic LED and gentle facials support this, but your at-home routine and trigger avoidance do much of the work.
Do you patch-test before treating sensitive skin?
Yes, where appropriate. Reactive skin warrants caution, so we patch-test and start conservatively. Active flaring eczema, infected or broken skin, or an undiagnosed rash are not suitable for cosmetic treatment until assessed. Dr Nick will advise or refer.

Your sensitive-skin care, led by a doctor

At Rejuvena in Bedford, your reactive skin is assessed and overseen by Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251). Because sensitive skin is a state rather than a single diagnosis, his first job is to distinguish simple barrier impairment from a medical condition such as eczema, rosacea or dermatitis — and to refer you appropriately rather than treat cosmetically when that is not right for you. Treatments and your barrier-repair routine are delivered alongside our skin therapist, Lana, who patch-tests, keeps every step gentle and reviews your progress. This doctor-led approach means stinging, tightness and redness are calmed with evidence-based, honest care tailored to your triggers.

Is it right for you?

Sensitive-skin care suits adults in and around Bedford with tight, dry, easily-irritated or reactive skin — redness or stinging from products or weather, or a mildly impaired barrier. It also suits anyone wanting a doctor-led assessment to rule a condition in or out before any treatment. A consultation with Dr Nick establishes whether gentle in-clinic options such as Dermalux LED, a barrier-supporting facial and a corrected home routine are right for you.

When it isn’t suitable

Cosmetic treatment is not suitable on actively flaring eczema or dermatitis, infected or broken skin, or active cold sores — these may need settling or medical management first. Suspected rosacea, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, photosensitivity or any sudden, non-healing or atypical rash is assessed and referred appropriately rather than treated blindly. LED needs caution in pregnancy, with photosensitising medication, recent isotretinoin or known light sensitivity, all checked at consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Sensitive, reactive skin is a chronic, barrier-based tendency that is managed and calmed but not cured, so we focus on lasting resilience rather than a one-off fix — and much of the result comes from your at-home routine and trigger avoidance. All plans are overseen by Dr Nick, with patch-testing and conservative, barrier-respecting treatment choices. LED is low-risk with possible transient warmth or mild redness; gentle facials and peels may cause temporary redness, tightness or mild flaking, which is why selection is conservative.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
