Understanding enlarged pores

Pore size is largely set by your genes, your skin’s oil output and the passage of time. You can’t permanently shrink or close a pore, but its appearance can be visibly refined with the right doctor-led plan.

What are enlarged (open) pores?

Enlarged pores (often called “open pores”) are the visibly widened surface openings of the skin’s oil-producing follicles (each a hair follicle paired with its sebaceous, or oil, gland). They are most noticeable across the central face: the nose, inner cheeks and chin, an area known as the T-zone. Enlarged pores are a benign, common cosmetic concern, not a disease, not contagious, and not something you have caused through poor skincare.

Three main drivers make a pore look larger: excess sebum (oil), which is the single strongest factor: the oilier the skin, the more prominent the pore; ageing and sun damage, which thin the collagen that supports the pore wall so it begins to gape; and genetics and skin type, which set your baseline. Blackheads and trapped keratin can also stretch the opening further.

Because the pore itself is a normal anatomical structure, no treatment can permanently close it, but by reducing oil, clearing what blocks the opening and rebuilding the collagen around it, we can make pores far less visible. If oily, congested pores sit alongside active breakouts, our acne treatment in Bedford may be the better starting point, and uneven colour rather than texture is addressed on our pigmentation treatment page.

How we refine pores

Three doctor-led routes to smoother, refined skin

There is no single fix for enlarged pores. At Rejuvena we triage your skin type, oil level and texture at a skin analysis with Dr Nick, then build a plan from the modalities below. Microneedling done poorly (or with oversized needles) can actually worsen texture, which is exactly why this is a doctor-led, not a DIY, treatment.

Collagen induction

SkinPen microneedling

Controlled micro-channels trigger the skin’s natural wound-healing and collagen-remodelling response, firming the tissue around each follicle so pores look tighter and texture smooths. Usually delivered as a course of treatments spaced roughly four weeks apart.

  • Best for Oily/combination skin, textured pores
  • Sessions A course, typically several, ~4 weeks apart
  • Downtime Mild redness, often 24–48 hours

SkinPen microneedling →

Resurfacing

Cool Laser™ skin resurfacing

Fractional resurfacing renews the surface layers and stimulates fresh collagen beneath, refining the look of stubborn, textured pores and improving overall smoothness. Settings are matched to your skin type to keep risk low.

  • Best for Textural irregularity, photoageing
  • Sessions Confirmed at your consultation
  • Downtime Redness and flaking for a few days

Cool Laser resurfacing →

Exfoliate & regulate

Chemical peels & medical facials

Targeted peels and facials & peels clear the keratin and sebum plugs that distend the opening, regulate oil and brighten the surface. A sebo-regulating BioRePeel is a strong option for oily, congested skin.

  • Best for Oily skin, blackheads, congestion
  • Sessions Often a maintenance course
  • Downtime Minimal; mild flaking possible

Facials & peels →

Your journey

What to expect: your pore-refining journey, step by step

1

Consultation & skin analysis

Dr Nick assesses your skin type, oil level and texture and checks the area for anything that should be reviewed before any cosmetic treatment. If a lesion looks atypical or changing, he assesses it and refers appropriately rather than treating over it.

2

Your tailored plan

Together we agree the right route (microneedling, resurfacing, peels or a combination) and set realistic, honest expectations: refined appearance, not permanently shrunk pores. We confirm the number of sessions and pricing here.

3

In-clinic treatment

Sessions are carried out by Lana under Dr Nick’s oversight. Most are comfortable and quick; we use suitable numbing or settings for your skin type to keep the experience easy.

4

Aftercare & recovery

Expect short-lived redness and, for some treatments, mild flaking. We advise gentle cleansing, pausing active acids and retinoids for a few days, and strict daily SPF: sun is a key driver of enlarged pores.

5

Results & maintenance

Early texture improvement often shows within 2–3 weeks, with fuller collagen remodelling building over 3–6 months. Results are not permanent, so a simple home routine and occasional maintenance keep your skin looking its best.

Realistic results

Realistic results & before / after

Honest expectations matter. Pore-refining treatments make pores look smaller and smoother; they do not permanently close or remove them. Results vary between individuals and depend on completing a course and maintaining good skincare and sun protection.

T-zone refinement

Smoother texture and less visible nose/cheek pores after a microneedling course. Results vary.

Oil & congestion

Reduced shine and clearer-looking pores after sebo-regulating peels. Results vary.

I recently had a Diamond Glow Facial and was very pleased with the experience. The treatment left my skin feeling deeply cleansed, refreshed, and smooth. My face looked brighter after the facial, and my skin felt much cleaner and healthier. Lana was professional and made me feel comfortable throughout the treatment. I would recommend this facial to anyone looking to give their skin a thorough cleanse and refresh.

FAQ

Enlarged pores FAQs in Bedford

Can enlarged pores be permanently shrunk or closed?
No. Pore size is largely set by genetics, oil output and ageing, and the pore is a normal anatomical structure that cannot be permanently closed. What we can do (and do well) is make pores look noticeably smaller and smoother by reducing oil, clearing blockages and rebuilding the collagen that supports the pore wall. The honest framing is “refined appearance”, not “shrunk”.
What causes enlarged pores on the nose and cheeks?
The nose, inner cheeks and chin (the T-zone) have the most oil glands, so they show the largest pores. The main drivers are excess sebum (oily skin), ageing and sun damage thinning the supporting collagen, your genetic skin type, and blackheads or trapped keratin stretching the opening.
Does microneedling really make pores smaller, and how many sessions will I need?
Microneedling such as SkinPen stimulates collagen around the follicle, which tightens the tissue and refines how pores look. It usually works best as a course: commonly several sessions spaced around four weeks apart. The exact number is confirmed for your skin at consultation. Done poorly or with oversized needles it can worsen texture, which is why we keep it doctor-led.
Is microneedling or laser better for large pores?
Neither is universally “better”; it depends on your skin. Microneedling suits oily or combination skin with textured pores; Cool Laser™ resurfacing often suits more stubborn textural change and photoageing; peels help oily, congested skin. Dr Nick triages this at a skin analysis and recommends the right route, or a combination.
Do chemical peels help with open pores and oily skin?
Yes. Medical peels and facials clear the keratin and sebum that distend the pore opening, regulate oil and brighten the surface, so pores look refined. A sebo-regulating peel like BioRePeel is a strong option for oily, congested skin, usually as a maintenance course.
Are the results permanent, and is there any downtime?
Results are not permanent: sun exposure and ageing gradually re-dilate pores, so a good home routine (daily SPF, and retinoid or niacinamide if advised) plus occasional maintenance keeps them looking their best. Downtime is modest: SkinPen usually means mild redness for 24–48 hours; resurfacing and some peels can cause a few days of redness and flaking.
Can I be treated if I have active acne or very oily, acne-prone skin?
Oily, acne-prone skin is common with enlarged pores and is often suitable for pore-refining care. However, active or inflammatory acne, cold sores or any skin infection in the area mean we treat the active problem first: see our acne treatment in Bedford. Dr Nick assesses your skin and advises the safe order of treatment.
How much does enlarged pore treatment cost in Bedford?
Because the plan depends on your skin type and which treatments suit you, pricing is confirmed at your consultation once Dr Nick has assessed your skin. We will never recommend a treatment you don’t need.

Treatments are delivered alongside our skin therapist, Lana, who supports you through each session. Is it right for you?

Enlarged pore treatment suits adults in and around Bedford bothered by visibly large or open pores, oily or combination skin and uneven texture, who are willing to commit to a course of treatment plus daily sun protection. A consultation with Dr Nick establishes whether SkinPen microneedling, Cool Laser resurfacing, medical peels or a combination is right for your skin type.

When it isn’t suitable

Pore-refining treatments are not suitable during active or inflammatory acne, cold sores or any skin infection in the area, an eczema or psoriasis flare at the site, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding for some modalities. Caution applies to those with a tendency to keloid scarring, bleeding disorders or on blood thinners (for microneedling), or recent isotretinoin. Darker skin tones need careful device and setting selection to limit pigmentation risk. Anyone with a changing or atypical lesion in the area is assessed by Dr Nick first, who refers appropriately rather than treating cosmetically over it.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Enlarged pores are a benign cosmetic concern; their appearance is refined and maintained, not cured, so results are gradual and require a course plus ongoing care. All plans are assessed and overseen by Dr Nick. Common, temporary side effects include redness, mild swelling, pinpoint bleeding and dryness or flaking, usually settling within 24-72 hours; less common are bruising, a temporary breakout, and post-inflammatory pigmentation especially in darker skin. Strict daily SPF is essential after treatment.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
