Understanding Radiesse

Radiesse is more than a filler. It restores volume the moment it is placed and stimulates your skin to build its own new collagen — but because it is not dissolvable like a hyaluronic-acid filler, who injects it matters.

What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) biostimulatory dermal filler that gives immediate lift and stimulates the skin’s own collagen (neocollagenesis) over the following months. Made by Merz Aesthetics, it is composed of smooth CaHA microspheres (around 25–45 microns) suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier — roughly 30% microspheres to 70% gel. CaHA is a biocompatible mineral chemically similar to the mineral found naturally in bone, with no animal- or human-derived material, so no allergy skin test is required.

This makes Radiesse a dual-action treatment. Unlike a standard hyaluronic-acid filler that simply adds volume, Radiesse acts as a scaffold that your own fibroblasts colonise to lay down fresh collagen and elastin. The result is restored contour today and gradually improving skin quality over the weeks that follow. At Rejuvena in Bedford, every Radiesse treatment is assessed and carried out by Dr Nick (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology, GMC 6072251), supported by skin therapist Lana under his oversight.

Classic Radiesse vs hyperdilute Radiesse

There are two ways we may use it. Classic Radiesse (often with lidocaine for comfort) is used to volumise and contour — defining the jawline and chin, supporting the cheeks, and softening jowls and folds. Hyperdilute Radiesse is diluted and spread more thinly to act as a skin-quality biostimulator, firming crepey skin on the neck, hands and décolletage. Which approach suits you — if either — is decided at your consultation with Dr Nick, not assumed in advance.

How it works

Calcium hydroxylapatite & collagen stimulation

Radiesse works in two phases: an immediate lift from the gel carrier, then a longer collagen-building phase as your body responds to the CaHA microsphere scaffold.

Doctor-led, precise filler injection technique at Rejuvena Clinic, Bedford — the same cannula-based approach used for Radiesse placement
CaHA · CMC gel

Immediate lift

On injection, the carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier provides instant volume and lift. This is the result you can see straight away — though some of it is the gel and a little transient swelling, which settles over the first two to three weeks.

  • Best for Jawline, chin, jowls, cheeks, folds
  • Onset Visible immediately
  • Settling 2–3 weeks
Neocollagenesis

Long-term collagen

Over the following weeks the gel is absorbed, leaving the CaHA microspheres as a three-dimensional scaffold. Fibroblasts colonise it and produce new collagen (types I and III), elastin and supporting matrix. The microspheres are then gradually broken down into calcium and phosphate and metabolised normally — what remains is your own new tissue.

  • Builds over ~2–3 months
  • Stimulates Collagen, elastin, matrix
  • Result Your own tissue, not the filler
Hyperdilute

Skin-quality firming

Diluted with saline and lidocaine, hyperdilute Radiesse is spread over larger zones as a biostimulator rather than a volumiser. It is used to improve crepey, lax skin on the neck, hands and chest — areas where structural collagen, not volume, is what’s needed.

  • Best for Neck, hands, décolletage
  • Action Collagen stimulation
  • Goal Firmer, smoother skin texture

The treatment

Your Radiesse treatment in Bedford — step by step

1

Consultation & assessment

Dr Nick reviews your medical history, examines the area and discusses realistic goals. He screens for contraindications and confirms whether Radiesse — and which form — is appropriate, or whether a different or medical pathway is the better option, in which case he refers you appropriately.

2

Preparation

The treatment area is cleansed. Radiesse contains (or is mixed with) lidocaine for comfort, and topical numbing may be used. No allergy test is needed because CaHA is non-animal and biocompatible.

3

Precise placement

Dr Nick injects Radiesse with a fine needle or cannula at the correct tissue depth. For contouring it is placed where structural support is needed; for hyperdilute skin firming it is spread evenly across the zone. Most treatments take around 15–30 minutes.

4

Immediate result & review

You will see an immediate lift. Dr Nick checks symmetry and that the result looks natural, not overdone, and confirms placement before you leave.

5

Aftercare & collagen phase

For 24–48 hours avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, excessive heat (sauna, sunbeds) and makeup for around 12–24 hours; sleep slightly elevated and use cool compresses for any swelling. Where possible, avoid dental work and non-urgent vaccinations for about two weeks. Your collagen-driven result then matures over the next two to three months.

Compare

Radiesse vs Sculptra vs Profhilo — which is right for you?

All three improve the skin from within, but they work differently. Dr Nick will help you choose at your consultation.

Radiesse (CaHA)

Immediate lift plus collagen stimulation. Ideal for jawline, jowl and chin contour and structural support. Lasts 12–18 months. Not dissolvable, so precise placement is essential — which is why it’s reserved for doctor-led assessment with Dr Nick.

Sculptra (PLLA)

Poly-L-lactic acid — a pure collagen stimulator with no immediate volume. Works gradually over a series of sessions for diffuse, global volume restoration. A natural alternative when slow, all-over rebuilding is the goal. Another collagen-building injectable we offer is polynucleotides.

Profhilo (HA)

A hyaluronic-acid bio-remodelling treatment focused on hydration and skin quality rather than structural lift — complementary to Radiesse. Explore Profhilo, or our reversible HA dermal fillers if you prefer a dissolvable option.

Suitability & safety

Is Radiesse right for you? Candidacy & safety

Who it may suit

Healthy adults wanting jawline, chin and jowl definition, mid-face and cheek support, softening of moderate folds and marionette lines, or — in hyperdilute form — firmer skin on the neck, hands and décolletage. It suits people wanting a longer-lasting, collagen-building option rather than (or alongside) HA fillers.

Who is not suitable

Radiesse is not recommended under 21, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection or inflammation at the site, known hypersensitivity to any component (or to lidocaine for the lidocaine form), or a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies. It is used with caution with bleeding disorders or anticoagulants, autoimmune or keloid tendencies. CaHA is not licensed for the lips, glabella or tear troughs — HA fillers are preferred there. Anyone whose laxity needs a device or surgery is redirected, not over-treated.

!

Side effects & risks

Common, temporary effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness and firmness, usually settling within days to about two weeks. Less commonly, palpable nodules or delayed inflammation can occur (sometimes triggered by later illness, dental work or vaccination). Rarely, accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause vascular occlusion, tissue damage or — very rarely — visual loss. Because CaHA cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase like HA fillers, being treated by a medically qualified doctor who can recognise and manage complications is essential.

Doctor-led, honest assessment

Fillers are effectively unregulated in the UK and are too often given by non-medical injectors after a short course. At Rejuvena, Radiesse is doctor-led by Dr Nick, who assesses suitability first and refers appropriately where needed. We describe realistic outcomes — restored volume and improved skin quality that lasts 12–18 months with maintenance, not a permanent or surgical result.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — Radiesse in Bedford

What is Radiesse made of?
Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres — a biocompatible mineral similar to that found in bone — suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier. It contains no animal- or human-derived material, so no allergy skin test is required.
How is Radiesse different from a normal dermal filler?
A standard hyaluronic-acid filler simply adds volume and can be dissolved. Radiesse is a biostimulator: it gives immediate volume and prompts your skin to build its own collagen over the following months. Because it is not dissolvable, accurate, doctor-led placement is especially important. Compare it with our reversible dermal fillers.
How long does Radiesse last?
Typically 12–18 months, sometimes longer, depending on the area, the volume used, your metabolism and lifestyle. It is not permanent and usually needs a maintenance treatment to sustain results. Individual results vary.
Radiesse vs Sculptra — which is better?
Neither is “better” — they suit different goals. Radiesse (CaHA) gives immediate lift plus collagen and is ideal for jawline and jowl contour. Sculptra (PLLA) gives no immediate volume but builds diffuse, global collagen gradually over a series of sessions. We also offer polynucleotides as a regenerative alternative. Dr Nick will recommend the right one at your consultation.
Can Radiesse be dissolved if I don’t like it?
Honestly, no — unlike hyaluronic-acid fillers, Radiesse cannot be reversed with hyaluronidase. This is exactly why correct patient selection and precise, medically qualified injection matter so much, and why it’s worth choosing a doctor-led clinic.
What is hyperdilute Radiesse and what does it treat?
Hyperdilute Radiesse is diluted with saline and lidocaine and spread thinly to act as a skin-quality biostimulator rather than a volumiser. It is used to firm crepey, lax skin on the neck, hands and décolletage by stimulating collagen.
Does Radiesse hurt and is there downtime?
Most treatments take around 15–30 minutes with mild discomfort, eased by the lidocaine in or mixed with the product. Downtime is minimal — transient swelling, bruising or tenderness can occur and usually settles within days to about two weeks.
Is Radiesse safe? What are the risks?
Radiesse has a good safety record in qualified hands. Common effects (redness, swelling, bruising, firmness) are temporary; nodules and delayed inflammation are less common; vascular occlusion is rare but serious. A medically qualified doctor who can recognise and manage complications is the key safeguard — particularly as Radiesse is not dissolvable.
How much does Radiesse cost in Bedford?
Your pricing is confirmed at your consultation, once Dr Nick has assessed you and agreed your plan, because it depends on the area and technique. Book a consultation to receive an accurate quote.

Your Radiesse treatment, performed by a doctor

At Rejuvena, every Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) treatment is assessed and administered by Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director, alongside skin therapist Lana. Radiesse is a biostimulatory filler that lifts immediately while stimulating your own collagen over the following months — and because it cannot be dissolved like a hyaluronic-acid filler, precise, doctor-led placement matters. Dr Nick assesses suitability first and refers appropriately where another pathway is more suitable.

Is it right for you?

Radiesse suits healthy adults wanting jawline, chin and jowl definition, mid-face support, or softening of moderate folds — and, in hyperdilute form, firmer skin on the neck, hands and décolletage. It is a good choice for those wanting a longer-lasting, collagen-building option rather than, or alongside, HA fillers.

When it isn’t suitable

Radiesse is not recommended under 21, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection at the site, known hypersensitivity to any component, or a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies. It is used with caution with bleeding disorders, anticoagulants, autoimmune or keloid tendencies, and is not licensed for the lips, glabella or tear troughs (HA fillers are preferred there). Dr Nick reviews your full history at consultation and refers appropriately where needed.
