What is Sculptra, and how is it different from a filler?
Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen biostimulator that gradually rebuilds the skin’s own collagen to restore facial volume and improve skin quality, with results developing over roughly three to six months and lasting up to around two years. Rather than instantly plumping a line with gel, it works with your biology: the PLLA microparticles prompt your fibroblasts to lay down new type I collagen, and the product itself is then safely metabolised, leaving your own collagen behind as the result.
That is the key distinction from a hyaluronic-acid dermal filler. A filler adds immediate, reversible volume on the day; Sculptra is a slow-build treatment that improves the foundation of the skin over a course of sessions. PLLA is a synthetic, biodegradable and biocompatible polymer that has been used in medicine for decades — for example in dissolvable surgical sutures. The injection session
The reconstituted PLLA is injected into the planned facial areas using fine needle or cannula technique. Any plumping you see immediately is mostly fluid and will settle within a few days — it is not your final result. Most sessions take around 30–45 minutes.
Aftercare & massage

Is Sculptra right for you? Candidacy, risks & who is not suitable
Sculptra may suit adults with age-related volume loss and collagen depletion — flattening cheeks, hollowing temples, deepening nasolabial folds, jawline laxity or post-weight-loss facial hollowing — who want a gradual, natural-looking restoration and an improvement in overall skin firmness rather than an instant filled line.
Sculptra is not suitable, or needs careful assessment, if you: are pregnant or breastfeeding; have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to PLLA or any product component; have active infection or inflammation in or near the treatment area; have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring; have an active autoimmune or connective-tissue disorder, or take immunomodulating medication; or want an instant result (a dermal filler may suit you better). Dr Nick reviews your full history and assesses suitability case by case.
Risks and side-effects. Common, usually temporary effects include injection-site swelling, redness, pain, bruising, tenderness and itching. The most characteristic PLLA-specific risk is small papules or subcutaneous nodules, which can appear with delay and are often palpable but not visible; correct dilution and injection technique minimise this risk, which is one reason this is a doctor-led treatment. Importantly, PLLA nodules cannot be dissolved in the way hyaluronic-acid filler can. As with any facial injectable, rarer serious risks include infection and, very rarely, vascular complications. The NHS notes that complications from fillers can be serious, underscoring the importance of a qualified medical practitioner, proper consultation and a cooling-off period.
Sculptra restores volume and skin quality — it does not treat or cure any underlying chronic skin condition, which is always managed rather than “cured.” If you present with an undiagnosed lump, lesion or any potentially concerning skin change, Dr Nick assesses it and refers appropriately rather than treating over it.
