Understanding pigmentation

Sun spots, melasma and post-acne marks can look alike — but they need entirely different treatments. So we diagnose the cause before we treat it.

Guide to pigmentation types and targeted treatment: solar lentigines, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles and seborrhoeic keratoses, and how each is treated.

The types of pigmentation we treat

Identifying the correct type of pigmentation is essential — different causes respond to different treatments:

  • Solar lentigines (sun spots / age spots): flat brown spots from UV exposure on the face, hands and décolletage. Highly responsive to Lumecca™ IPL.
  • Melasma: symmetrical brown or grey-brown facial patches linked to hormones and UV. Requires specialist treatment — Cosmelan® is the most effective approach.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): dark marks after acne, eczema or injury, more pronounced in medium/darker skin. Treated with peels, prescription topicals and IPL where appropriate.
  • Ephelides (freckles): genetic, intensified by sun; superficial and highly responsive to IPL.
  • Seborrhoeic keratoses: raised, barnacle-like brown growths; treated with Cool Laser™ ablation.
The technology

The right platform for your pigmentation

Rejuvena matches the technology to the diagnosis. Lumecca Peak™ IPL clears superficial pigment; the Cosmelan® protocol treats melasma and reactive skin tones where light-based devices carry more risk.

IPL · 500–600nm

Lumecca Peak™ IPL

High-peak-power pulses optimised to the 500–600nm range — the spectrum of maximum melanin absorption — target excess pigment in sun spots and freckles without affecting surrounding skin. A sapphire cooling tip keeps sessions comfortable, and most solar lentigines clear in just 1–3 sessions rather than the 4–6 typical of standard IPL.

  • Best for Sun spots, freckles, uneven tone (I–III)
  • Sessions 1–3, spaced 4–6 weeks
  • Session 30–60 minutes by area
  • Downtime Spots flake over 5–10 days
Depigmentation protocol

Cosmelan®

A world-leading medical depigmentation system for melasma and persistent hyperpigmentation. It inhibits tyrosinase — the enzyme behind melanin synthesis — reducing overproduction rather than just removing existing pigment, making it effective even where IPL or laser would risk triggering more pigment in reactive skin. In clinical studies, around 90% of patients see significant depigmentation.

  • Best for Melasma, PIH; all skin tones (III–VI)
  • Phases In-clinic mask + home maintenance
  • Downtime Redness & mild peeling, week 1
  • Results Build over several months

For raised seborrhoeic keratoses, the Dermablate Cool Laser™ (Er:YAG) ablates the lesion in a single session. And as a GMC-registered prescriber, Dr. Nick can add prescription topicals — tretinoin, azelaic acid and others — to enhance and maintain results, with no separate GP appointment needed.

The journey

Your pigmentation treatment — step by step

1

Diagnosis first

Dr. Nick identifies the specific type and cause of your pigmentation — sun spots, melasma, PIH or other — because each responds to a different protocol.

2

Tailored protocol

The right approach is selected for your pigmentation type and skin tone — Lumecca™ IPL, Cosmelan®, Cool Laser™ or prescription topicals, alone or combined.

3

Treatment

IPL passes across the skin with a cooling gel and eye protection (30–45 min), or the Cosmelan® mask is applied in clinic for you to remove at home after 8–12 hours.

4

Healing

After IPL, spots darken (a good sign) and flake over 5–10 days. With Cosmelan®, expect redness and mild peeling in the first week.

5

Maintenance & sun protection

Daily SPF 50+ and a maintenance programme are essential — without strict sun protection, pigmentation (especially melasma) will recur.

Why Rejuvena

Why choose Rejuvena for pigmentation treatment in Bedford?

Lumecca Peak™ IPL

Higher peak power and an optimised wavelength versus standard IPL — fewer sessions for the same result.

Cosmelan® available

The leading clinical solution for melasma — safe across all skin tones, where IPL carries higher risk.

A medical prescriber

Dr. Nick can prescribe topicals (tretinoin, azelaic acid) directly — no separate GP appointment needed.

Diagnosis-first

Treatment is matched to your pigmentation type and skin tone — not a one-size-fits-all package.

What to expect

Before, during and after treatment

Before

Avoid sun exposure for 2–4 weeks and stop retinol or acid products for 5–7 days before IPL. Come with clean skin and no self-tan.

During

For IPL, a cooling gel is applied and each pulse feels like a brief warm snap (30–45 min, eye protection throughout). For Cosmelan®, the mask is applied in clinic and removed at home after 8–12 hours.

After

IPL spots darken then flake over 5–10 days; Cosmelan® brings redness and peeling in week 1. Daily SPF 50+ throughout any pigmentation programme is non-negotiable for lasting results.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — pigmentation treatment in Bedford

What is Lumecca Peak™ IPL and how is it different to standard IPL?
Lumecca Peak™ delivers higher peak power in an optimised 500–600nm wavelength range — the peak absorption spectrum for melanin. This means it targets pigment more precisely and effectively than standard IPL, requiring fewer sessions (1–3 vs 4–6) for the same result.
What is the best treatment for melasma in Bedford?
The Cosmelan® depigmentation protocol is the most clinically effective treatment for melasma at Rejuvena. It inhibits melanin production at the cellular level and is appropriate for all skin tones including darker skin types where IPL carries higher risks.
Is pigmentation treatment safe for darker skin tones?
Yes, with the right protocol. For Fitzpatrick III–VI, Cosmelan® and prescription topicals are the preferred approach. Dr. Nick assesses your skin tone at consultation and selects the safest, most effective protocol for you.
How much does pigmentation treatment cost in Bedford?
From £175 for a single Lumecca™ IPL session. Cosmelan® from £395. See our pricing page for full details.
How many IPL sessions do I need for sun spots?
Most solar lentigines respond in 1–3 Lumecca Peak™ sessions, with results visible after the first session in most patients.
Will my pigmentation come back?
Without strict sun protection, pigmentation will recur — especially melasma. Dr. Nick provides a maintenance programme including SPF 50+ guidance and maintenance topicals to prevent recurrence long-term.

Is it right for you?

Pigmentation treatment suits adults troubled by sun spots, freckles, melasma, post-acne marks or general uneven tone who want a clinically guided plan. Lumecca Peak IPL is ideal for superficial pigment and sun spots on lighter skin types (I–III), while the Cosmelan protocol and prescription topicals suit melasma and all skin tones, including medium to darker skin. A consultation with Dr Nick determines the most appropriate option for your skin.

When it isn’t suitable

IPL and ablative laser are not suitable for very recently tanned skin, active infection in the area, or for those who cannot commit to strict sun protection, as pigmentation will recur. Light-based treatments carry higher risks in darker Fitzpatrick types (IV–VI), where Cosmelan and topicals are preferred instead. Treatment is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and certain medications, photosensitivity and a history of keloid scarring may affect suitability; Dr Nick will assess this at consultation.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

All pigmentation treatments at Rejuvena are carried out under doctor-led supervision following a skin assessment by Dr Nick, with eye protection and cooling used during IPL for comfort and safety. Side effects are usually mild and temporary: after IPL, spots typically darken (an expected sign) then flake away over five to ten days, with possible short-lived redness or swelling. With Cosmelan, expect redness, mild peeling and dryness in the first week. Less commonly, light-based treatments can cause blistering or temporary changes in pigmentation, which is why correct device and protocol selection for your skin type is essential.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
