Understanding skin tags

Skin tags are harmless — but home removal kits can’t tell a tag from a mole or cyst. Every lesion is assessed by a doctor before anything is removed.

Labeled anatomy of a skin tag (fibroepithelial polyp): benign skin tissue on a thin attachment stalk with a fibrovascular core — and why home removal can confuse a tag with a mole or other lesion.

What is a skin tag, and is it safe to remove?

A skin tag (fibroepithelial polyp or acrochordon) is a small, soft, benign growth of excess skin attached by a thin stalk. They are entirely harmless — composed of normal skin tissue — and do not become cancerous. They develop most frequently where skin rubs against skin or clothing: the neck, armpits, eyelid margins, under the breasts and groin. Skin tags become more common with age, weight gain, pregnancy and insulin resistance.

While removal is not medically necessary, it is entirely safe when performed correctly. The key concern with home removal products (string, freeze kits, tag remover pens) is that they cannot distinguish a skin tag from a mole, sebaceous cyst or other lesion — with potentially harmful consequences if an incorrect lesion is treated. At Rejuvena, every lesion is clinically assessed before any removal takes place.

The technology

One laser, exceptional precision

Skin tags are removed with the Dermablate Cool Laser™ — a medical-grade Er:YAG, not a diathermy pen or beauty device. Dr. Nick assesses every lesion before treating it.

Dermablate Cool Laser Er:YAG handpiece
Er:YAG · 2940nm

Dermablate Cool Laser™

The 2940nm Er:YAG wavelength sits at the highest water-absorption peak in skin, so each pulse removes a controlled ~20–30 micron layer with minimal heat spread. A single well-directed pulse at the base of the stalk usually removes the whole tag cleanly, and built-in cooling keeps the surface comfortable — healing to near-invisible within weeks.

  • Best for Neck, underarm, eyelid & groin tags
  • Sessions Usually a single session
  • Downtime Tiny scab, gone in 7–10 days
  • Scarring Very low with correct technique

The session

The skin tag removal session — step by step

1

Lesion assessment

Dr. Nick examines each lesion to confirm it is a skin tag and documents its size, number and location. Any lesion with atypical features is assessed more thoroughly before treatment.

2

Topical anaesthesia

EMLA cream is applied to the treatment area 20–30 minutes before the laser session to numb the skin.

3

Cool Laser™ ablation

The Er:YAG laser is directed at the base of each tag. Each tag typically takes 5–15 seconds to remove; multiple tags are treated in sequence.

4

Immediate review

Dr. Nick confirms complete removal and that the surrounding tissue is undisturbed.

5

Post-treatment care

A light antiseptic dressing is applied where needed, with written aftercare instructions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions — skin tag removal in Bedford

What laser is used for skin tag removal at Rejuvena?
The Dermablate Cool Laser™, an Er:YAG laser at 2940nm. It ablates tissue with extreme precision and minimal heat spread — ideal for clean removal of skin tags from sensitive areas including the eyelids and neck.
How much does laser skin tag removal cost in Bedford?
From £95 for a single tag. See our pricing page for multi-tag pricing.
Does laser removal leave a scar?
The risk of visible scarring is very low with the Cool Laser™. A small pink mark forms and typically fades to normal skin tone within 4–8 weeks.
How many skin tags can be removed in one session?
Multiple tags across different areas can be treated in a single session — there is no strict limit. This is one of the advantages of choosing Rejuvena for skin tag removal in Bedford.
Can skin tags on the eyelid be removed?
Yes. Dr. Nick uses the Cool Laser™ with precision technique to remove eyelid skin tags safely. This is a specialist area not suitable for home treatments or beauty therapists.

Your skin tag removal, performed by a doctor

At Rejuvena, every lesion is clinically assessed before anything is removed. Dr Nick, our GMC-registered Medical Director (MBBS, MRCGP, Diploma in Dermatology), examines each skin tag to confirm it is benign, then removes it using the medical-grade Dermablate Cool Laser™ (Er:YAG 2940nm) — not a diathermy pen or home kit. He works alongside skin therapist Lana as part of our doctor-led team, so your care, from assessment to aftercare, is genuinely clinically supervised. We confirm what we are treating before we treat it.

Is it right for you?

Skin tag removal suits adults with one or more soft, benign skin tags that catch on clothing or jewellery, cause irritation, or that they would simply prefer removed. It is well suited to those with clusters on the neck, underarms or groin who want several tags treated in a single appointment, and to anyone wanting a delicate eyelid tag addressed by a doctor. Because every lesion is assessed first, it is also ideal if you are unsure whether a growth is genuinely a skin tag.

When it isn’t suitable

It is not suitable where a lesion shows atypical features that need further investigation rather than removal — Dr Nick will assess any such lesion more thoroughly before proceeding, and may recommend a different pathway. Caution applies in pregnancy, with active skin infection at the site, a tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scarring, or certain photosensitising medication. If a lesion may be a mole, cyst or other growth rather than a skin tag, it will be evaluated accordingly and not treated as a routine tag.

Your safety

Safety, side effects & what to expect

Treatment is carried out under topical anaesthesia (EMLA applied 20–30 minutes beforehand), and the Cool Laser™ removes tissue in controlled micron-thin layers with minimal heat spread, which keeps scarring risk very low. Each tag takes only seconds, and most multi-tag sessions complete in under 30 minutes. Common, temporary effects include small pink marks and minor scabs at each site, which fall away naturally in 7–10 days, with mild redness settling soon after. Healing is usually complete within 4–8 weeks; sites should be kept clean and dry and not rubbed for 7–14 days.

Individual results vary and are not guaranteed. Treatments are provided only after a consultation and medical assessment. This information is educational and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
