Depending on the treatment area and applicator used, HIFU can deliver focused energy at selected depths that may include the superficial musculoaponeurotic system — or SMAS. However, HIFU does not reproduce the degree of lifting achieved through a surgical facelift.
What is HIFU, and how does it work?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive energy-based treatment that delivers focused ultrasound at planned depths beneath the skin. The energy creates small, controlled thermal points within the targeted tissue, initiating a healing response that supports collagen contraction and remodelling.
Depending on the treatment area and device settings, energy may be delivered to different tissue depths, including the deeper support layers of the face. This can produce a gradual and usually modest improvement in mild-to-moderate laxity affecting areas such as the jawline, jowls and neck.
The skin is not cut or penetrated, but HIFU still produces a controlled biological effect beneath the surface.
